Pennsylvania Voices Book IV The River Keeper:The Fourth “R” Remembrance as Courage Maryann DiEdwardo and Patricia Pasda The branches of the eastern hemlock outside the window squeak against the snowy pane. It is winter. A light coating of snow lays softly on the ground. Above the blue green shadows tower the oak and maples, only a few virgin, which knew the descendants of the earth. We write again of Allison Grey, the fictional river keeper, who exists to honor all real river keepers who save our rivers.

With the inclusion of climate change in the NGSS, the time is ripe for a program that guides students to not only learn about but also engage in environmental activism. This guide to getting youth involved in energy management fills that need. Young Voices for the Planet started out as a film series featuring students who are actively trying to shrink the carbon footprint of their schools, homes, and communities. This companion to that film series includes inspiring stories of youth in action and a guide to practical student activism. Part I contains the true stories of seven youth projects, allowing you to follow their paths to success. The films--all of which can be accessed free of charge--supplement this part of the text by providing an introduction to climate science and energy curriculum for upper elementary through high school. These powerful stories can be integrated into lessons on STEM, Social Studies, and Environmental Studies. They will also help to teach about democracy and civic engagement. Part II is a practical action guide to begin a project that is important to students' own communities. Whether the project is integrated into the regular curriculum, structured for enrichment or remediation, or organized under the auspices of a club or community effort, educators will find many practical tips for success. "Think globally, act locally" isn't just a bumper sticker. It's the game plan for exciting and powerful student activism. This section describes how in-school or after-school groups can begin their own efforts to save the planet, including the nitty-gritty details on planning, financing, safety, and liability.

Challenges and change have been the constants defining the Philadelphia public school system. Successive waves of districtwide reform, takeover, privatization efforts, and ongoing reorganization strained an already thin civic and educational infrastructure. In this context, two community organizations - Eastern Pennsylvania Organizing Project (EPOP) and Youth United for Change (YUC) - emerged as key voices in the struggle to ensure that low-income neighborhoods would benefit from reform. EPOP's and YUC's education campaigns succeeded in keeping the voices of parents and students at the forefront of reform. School campaigns pushed district officials to respond to concrete and immediate needs: old facilities, violence in and surrounding schools, outdated and insufficient library materials. Both organizations also pushed for districtwide reform: EPOP raised the visibility of parents' and teachers' concerns about transparency in the wake of the state takeover of the district, and YUC's extensive research on small schools and ongoing surveys of high school students positioned the group to influence the district's high school reform strategy. This report shares findings from a six-year research study on the impact of EPOP's and YUC's education organizing on district policy, increased school capacity, and improved student outcomes.
