Completely updated to the current care guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and elsewhere, this book addresses the current emphasis on managing medications for HIV treatment and many of the illnesses that commonly occur along with HIV. Combining the latest medical advice with the ideas of hundreds of people living with HIV/AIDS, the book is helpful for adults living with HIV, and for friends, family members, and others who support anyone struggling with HIV/AIDS. New additions to this edition include topics such as aging with HIV and coping with the emotions brought about by being a long-term survivor.

The world continues to lose more than a million lives each year to the HIV epidemic, and nearly two million individuals were infected with HIV in 2017 alone. The new Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by countries of the United Nations in September 2015, include a commitment to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Considerable emphasis on prevention of new infections and treatment of those living with HIV will be needed to make this goal achievable. With nearly 37 million people now living with HIV, it is a communicable disease that behaves like a noncommunicable disease. Nutritional management is integral to comprehensive HIV care and treatment. Improved nutritional status and weight gain can increase recovery and strength of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, improve dietary diversity and caloric intake, and improve quality of life. This book highlights evidence-based research linking nutrition and HIV and identifies research gaps to inform the development of guidelines and policies for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. A comprehensive approach that includes nutritional interventions is likely to maximize the benefit of antiretroviral therapy in preventing HIV disease progression and other adverse outcomes in HIV-infected men and women. Modification of nutritional status has been shown to enhance the quality of life of those suffering HIV/AIDS, both physically in terms of improved body mass index and immunological markers, and psychologically, by improving symptoms of depression. While the primary focus for those infected should remain on antiretroviral treatment and increasing its availability and coverage, improvement of nutritional status plays a complementary role in the management of HIV infection.

It is for use in both inpatient and outpatient care in small hospitals with basic laboratory facilities and essential medicines. In some settings these guidelines can be used in any facilities where sick children are admitted for inpatient care. The Pocket Book is one of a series of documents and tools that support the Integrated Managem.

"HIV is now considered a manageable chronic disease thanks to several treatment options. This means that many people who have HIV can live longer and fuller lives. We wrote this booklet to address some of the concerns that are specific to older people with HIV. The needs that most people with HIV cite as important include: How HIV affects aging Living with two or more long-term conditions Loss of motivation Care coordination Planning for the future Of course, everyone is different, so you should read this booklet in any order that is meaningful to you. If you do not find a topic mentioned here, including information about other common chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, or symptoms such as pain and fatigue, or skills such as exercise and healthy eating, you can find these in the book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions"--
