Excerpt from Year Book of Albion College for 1892-93 For some time nothing further was done. The school was never opened at this place, and no buildings were erected. Under the discouraging conditions that prevailed many of its friends were ready to abandon the enterprise. In the meantime the village of Albion had sprung into existence, and some of its most prominent citizens made a proposition for the removal of the school to that place. This received the endorsement of the Michigan Annual Conference which had been formed by division of the Ohio Conference, and the Legislature of the State in 1839 amended the charter, giving it the corporate name of Wes leyan Seminary, making the proposed change of location, and reconstructing the Board of Trustees. From this point the history of the Institution may be put into three distinct periods. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Year-Book of Albion College for 1886-87 IN giving this year-book to the public we have two objects in View. We seek to contribute in some measure to the solu tion of the problem of education which is now engaging the thoughts of many earnest educators and friends of human pro gress. We also desire to lay before the people the plans and Spirit of work as it is carried forward at Albion College. The state and the church should not be competitors in the educational field. They should co-operate so that the two shall accomplish more than either alone can possibly achieve. Tn erecting a state university it was not intended to throw any obstruction in the way of church efforts to educate the people. It was a practical and effective recognition of the duty of the state to care for the instruction of the young. And it is as much the duty of the church to make provision for the education of the people as if the state failed in the discharge of her obliga tions. The christian church can reach a class which the state is unable to influence. It can also supply positive religious influences and guidance which secular schools cannot guarantee. We call special attention to the following facts in connection with Albion College. The institution is under the control of the Methodist Episcopal Church, but is not sectarian m its spirit or movements. Many of the students come from families be longing to other churches. A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
