Judith Butler’s new book shows how an ethic of nonviolence must be connected to a broader political struggle for social equality. Further, it argues that nonviolence is often misunderstood as a passive practice that emanates from a calm region of the soul, or as an individualist ethical relation to existing forms of power. But, in fact, nonviolence is an ethical position found in the midst of the political field. An aggressive form of nonviolence accepts that hostility is part of our psychic constitution, but values ambivalence as a way of checking the conversion of aggression into violence. One contemporary challenge to a politics of nonviolence points out that there is a difference of opinion on what counts as violence and nonviolence. The distinction between them can be mobilised in the service of ratifying the state’s monopoly on violence. Considering nonviolence as an ethical problem within a political philosophy requires a critique of individualism as well as an understanding of the psychosocial dimensions of violence. Butler draws upon Foucault, Fanon, Freud, and Benjamin to consider how the interdiction against violence fails to include lives regarded as ungrievable. By considering how ‘racial phantasms’ inform justifications of state and administrative violence, Butler tracks how violence is often attributed to those who are most severely exposed to its lethal effects. The struggle for nonviolence is found in movements for social transformation that reframe the grievability of lives in light of social equality and whose ethical claims follow from an insight into the interdependency of life as the basis of social and political equality.

In this timely, highly original, and controversial narrative, New York Times bestselling author Mark Kurlansky discusses nonviolence as a distinct entity, a course of action, rather than a mere state of mind. Nonviolence can and should be a technique for overcoming social injustice and ending wars, he asserts, which is why it is the preferred method of those who speak truth to power. Nonviolence is a sweeping yet concise history that moves from ancient Hindu times to present-day conflicts raging in the Middle East and elsewhere. Kurlansky also brings into focus just why nonviolence is a “dangerous” idea, and asks such provocative questions as: Is there such a thing as a “just war”? Could nonviolence have worked against even the most evil regimes in history? Kurlansky draws from history twenty-five provocative lessons on the subject that we can use to effect change today. He shows how, time and again, violence is used to suppress nonviolence and its practitioners–Gandhi and Martin Luther King, for example; that the stated deterrence value of standing national armies and huge weapons arsenals is, at best, negligible; and, encouragingly, that much of the hard work necessary to begin a movement to end war is already complete. It simply needs to be embraced and accelerated. Engaging, scholarly, and brilliantly reasoned, Nonviolence is a work that compels readers to look at history in an entirely new way. This is not just a manifesto for our times but a trailblazing book whose time has come.

This widely-praised book identified peaceful struggle as a key phenomenon in international politics a year before the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt confirmed its central argument. Civil resistance - non-violent action against such challenges as dictatorial rule, racial discrimination and foreign military occupation - is a significant but inadequately understood feature of world politics. Especially through the peaceful revolutions of 1989, and the developments in the Arab world since December 2010, it has helped to shape the world we live in. Civil Resistance and Power Politics covers most of the leading cases, including the actions master-minded by Gandhi, the US civil rights struggle in the 1960s, the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979, the 'people power' revolt in the Philippines in the 1980s, the campaigns against apartheid in South Africa, the various movements contributing to the collapse of the Soviet Bloc in 1989-91, and, in this century, the 'colour revolutions' in Georgia and Ukraine. The chapters, written by leading experts, are richly descriptive and analytically rigorous. This book addresses the complex interrelationship between civil resistance and other dimensions of power. It explores the question of whether civil resistance should be seen as potentially replacing violence completely, or as a phenomenon that operates in conjunction with, and modification of, power politics. It looks at cases where campaigns were repressed, including China in 1989 and Burma in 2007. It notes that in several instances, including Northern Ireland, Kosovo and, Georgia, civil resistance movements were followed by the outbreak of armed conflict. It also includes a chapter with new material from Russian archives showing how the Soviet leadership responded to civil resistance, and a comprehensive bibliographical essay. Illustrated throughout with a remarkable selection of photographs, this uniquely wide-ranging and path-breaking study is written in an accessible style and is intended for the general reader as well as for students of Modern History, Politics, Sociology, and International Relations.

At first glance, this handbook seems to look like just another self-help book for those seeking a way to deal with conflict such as a local bully who is tormenting them in school or at work; but as we all know looks can be deceiving! No doubt those needing a means to deal with such a bully will find help by learning and applying the basic peacemaking skills identified, described and illustrated in Part I; using the nine letters of WE DO PEACE as a reminder of each one. Even if this handbook ended at this point it would still have invaluably served those seeking help in handling conflict in their lives by providing them with an easy way to remember the nine basic peacemaking skills needed to resolve one-on-one disputes in a rational, non-violent way. The authors introduce us to WeDoPeace Communities, their transformative model comprised of two components for achieving a world without violence. The first component being WeDoPeace101, a school system-wide package of grade specific programs that teach and train all K-12 students the basic skills of peacemaking. The second component is a community-wide network of WeDoPeace Teams, comprised of qualified peacemakers available to assist residents whenever they need help in resolving conflicts arising in their homes. schools, neighborhoods and workplaces. Conflict is normal; Violence is not ! Conflict can be resolved without violence if we know how to do peace. "Achieving A World Without Violence: The WeDoPeace Handbook" is a personal self-help book of peacemaking skills for those wishing to be able to confront and resolve their own conflicts and have peace in their lives. It will save lives." -Washington Post “Essential, devastating reading.” -Cheryl Strayed, New York Times Book Review An award-winning journalist's intimate investigation of the true scope of domestic violence, revealing how the roots of America's most pressing social crises are buried in abuse that happens behind closed doors. We call it domestic violence. We call it private violence. Sometimes we call it intimate terrorism. But whatever we call it, we generally do not believe it has anything at all to do with us, despite the World Health Organization deeming it a “global epidemic.” In America, domestic violence accounts for 15 percent of all violent crime, and yet it remains locked in silence, even as its tendrils reach unseen into so many of our most pressing national issues, from our economy to our education system, from mass shootings to mass incarceration to #MeToo. We still have not taken the true measure of this problem. In No Visible Bruises, journalist Rachel Louise Snyder gives context for what we don't know we're seeing. She frames this urgent and immersive account of the scale of domestic violence in our country around key stories that explode the common myths-that if things were bad enough, victims would just leave; that a violent person cannot become nonviolent; that shelter is an adequate response; and most insidiously that violence inside the home is a private matter, sealed from the public sphere and disconnected from other forms of violence. Through the stories of victims, perpetrators, law enforcement, and reform movements from across the country, Snyder explores the real roots of private violence, its far-reaching consequences for society, and what it will take to truly address it.

This small handbook addresses a very big problem - How to change a culture of violence to one of peace. It provides the reader with a step by step method for dealing with conflict we all confront in our day to day lives in our homes, at our jobs, in our schools and in our neighborhoods; provides a plan for volunteers to extend this method of doing peace across our communities and ultimately right across the globe to create a world without violence. Part I of this peace handbook, at first glance, seems to look like just another self-help book for those seeking a way to deal with confronting a conflict such as a local bully who is tormenting them in school or at work; but as we all know looks can be deceiving! No doubt those needing a means to confront such a bully will find help in doing so by learning and applying the nine basic peacemaking skills, identified, described and illustrated in Part I using the nine letters of WE DO PEACE as a reminder of each one. Even if this handbook ended at this point it would still have served those seeking help in handling conflict in their lives by providing them with an easy way to remember the basic peacemaking skills needed to resolve one-on-one disputes in a rational, non-violent way. These skills highlighted by authors Sharon Ernst & Walter Sylvester and effectively illustrated by Jean Roosenberg are not new in the field of conflict resolution. The Conflict Resolution Network based in Australia has been instrumental in developing, promoting and implementing them on that continent over the decades; and has been effective in spreading them globally through adherents who have adapted and used them to deal with all kinds of conflict in all manner of situations and venues. Part II does indeed separate this handbook from most other self-help books in that it extends the scope of self-help to others by introducing us to the concept of WeDoPeace Communities. The authors show us how we can transform our village, town or city into a WeDoPeace Community by the taking of two steps: First, by having our school systems adopt WeDoPeace101: a Pre K-12 package of proven educational and training programs from around the world to teach and train all of us in the use of the basic peacemaking skills of negotiation, mediation and peace circles. Second, by creating a community-wide network of WeDoPeace Teams: Teams of qualified peacemakers who have been trained to help local residents in need of assistance in resolving the conflict in their lives. Many of these adult peace team members will be those who learned their peacemaking skills while students in their school system's WeDoPeace101 program. Part III is a call to action by the authors urging their readers to volunteer and join a movement to make every village, town and city across the globe into a WeDoPeace Community by persuading their local school boards and elected leaders to adopt WeDoPeace101 and to create WeDoPeace Teams. The authors contend that If everyone could be taught and trained in using the basic peacemaking skills from the time they were toddlers the result would be that within just a few generations a culture of peace would replace the current culture of violence that now envelops our world. The logic is compelling, but most would argue that it is too simplistic and not realistic. Yet the authors show you not only where the programs that constitute WeDoPeace101 already exist, but also where they have successfully taught and trained tens of thousands in the skills of peacemaking for more than two decades. A World Without Violence is a personal self-help handbook of peacemaking skills for those wishing to be able to confront and resolve conflicts in their lives. It is based upon well proven and documented conflict resolution principles and programs. At the same time it presents readers with both a vision and a plan of action as to how these peacemaking skills can be scaled up to bring about A World Without Violence.

Joan Slonczewski's A Door into Ocean is the novel upon which the author's reputation as an important SF writer principally rests. A ground-breaking work both of feminist SF and of world-building hard SF, it concerns the Sharers of Shora, a nation of women on a distant moon in the far future who are pacifists, highly advanced in biological sciences, and who reproduce by parthenogenesis--there are no males--and tells of the conflicts that erupt when a neighboring civilization decides to develop their ocean world, and send in an army. This book interrogates several strands of Gandhian design, articulations, methods and ideals, through five sections. These include Theoretical Perspectives, Peace and World Order, Revolutionary Experiments, National Integration and Gandhi in Chinese Discourses. The authors seek to provide answers to questions as: Were Gandhian ideas utopian? What is the contemporary relevance of Gandhi? Do his ideas share convergence with theory in world politics and international relations? What was his role in forging national integration? How did his ideologies and experiments with truth resonate with countries as China? The writings also underline that being averse to individualism, for Gandhi it was the realm of societal interests which were significant, encompassing the good of humanity, dignity of labor and village-centric development. Development paradigms and health related challenges are articulated in the book to underline the significance of Gandhi's vision of 'Leave no one behind' to create an egalitarian society with respect and tolerance. The book presents the essential humility and simplicity of Gandhi. This book is a must read for those who seek to understand Gandhi in a way that is candid and inclusive. It's a book that conceals nothing and does not shy away from presenting debates on Gandhi. Moreover, it is a factual account, with contributors having relied extensively on archival materials, essays and an extensive review of literature. Hence, the book is replete with pertinent documentation and scholarship and makes a significant value-addition in the literature on Gandhi.
