Law governing woman rights in African countries is a complex framework that requires exploration. For instance, women inheritance law governing some parts of Nigeria gives little or no right for women to claim ownership of their deceased husband which pose risk on the mental, emotional and social well-being of such women. There has been several books written as a result of many cases of women suffering after the death of their husband in African. Thus, this book is an examination of women's rights of inheritance in Nigeria and in comparison with that Botswana, Zambia and Ghana. Different cases, treaties were investigated to back of the claim in this book. It took a little bit of traveling to get the fact right which implies that this book is not one of the online copy and paste work. Also, I have written this book to enlighten the world about the law governing women inheritance and how they might be improved upon. Scientific Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Social System and Social Structure, , language: English, abstract: From time immemorial, women have suffered greatly and disproportionately in comparison to their male counterpart. Most societies have been essentially patriarchal but in no area of political, social and religious life has the despicable plight of women been more conspicuously noticeable than in the aspect of inheritance. Over time, concrete efforts have been made in the Western world to stem this tide, while African societies, on the other hand, have not recorded much achievement in this area. National constitutions of African and other developing countries tend to prohibit discriminations against women in property inheritance, yet discriminatory traditional and customary practices persist. International treaties are merely ratified by these countries without committed implementation. This paper is posed to interrogate existing practices and laws in African and developing societies regarding the right of women to inherit property on the same footing as men in the light of developments in the Western world. At the end, recommendations are proffered so that those countries of the world which are lagging behind in treating women appropriately may have a second thought.

Nigerian women are undeniably Nigerians. The status bestow on them, rights and privileges enjoyed by other Nigerians. More so, statistics reveals that they constitute 69,086,302 of Nigeria's 140,431,790 population. This book examines the enforcement of women's rights as human rights in Nigeria. In doing this, it considers customs, constitution, laws, policies, courts' decisions as the court is the last hope of the common man and the place of obligations-imposing international and regional treaties ratified by Nigeria. Also it examines the difficulty of proper balancing of ideals like repressive customs versus societal standards, judicial activism versus Separation of Powers, inadequacy of laws versus non exhaustiveness of laws, international versus local laws supremacy.

This is the third edition of an established and leading book on family law in Nigeria. Since the last edition in 1990 significant judicial and statutory enactments have taken place in the area of study. The new edition incorporates these changes and explains their implications. The chapters have been comprehensively re-written to reflect the changes in the law and to update all relevant information including the Same Sex Bill and the Nigerian Law Reform Commissions draft Marriage Act. New chapters have been included on domestic violence and widowhood respectively to reflect the continuing developments in Nigerian family law. The new Child's Right Act of 2003 and the similar state legislations have been analysed in the three new chapters. The non-customary law rules in the intestate succession have been extensively recast to reflect the provisions of the Marriage act as contained in the Lawa of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. This edition has devoted considerable attention to the applicable customary laws on the family and provides extensive treatment of Islamic Law Rules and their interpretations and application by the superior court. Familu law in Nigeria presents a fresh view not only on the applicable rules on Nigerian family law but also suggest new directions and underlines the socio-economic implications.
