This report summarizes wind tunnel test data on various body alone configurations which provide a data matrix for bluff and pointed bodies of revolution with systematic variations in nose bluffness, nose fineness ratio, and cylinder afterbody fineness ratio. Modular model components were used to obtain static stability and drag data, with emphasis on the effect of nose bluffness on drag. Although data is included for tangent ogive noses of fineness ratio 2, 2.25, 2.5, 3.0, and 4, the nose fineness ratios of 2, 3, and 4 calibers include a systematic variation in nose bluffness ratios of 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 on cylindrical midsections of 5, 7, 9, and 11 calibers. A 1-caliber cylindrical afterbody is used with all configurations in this report.

Wing tunnel tests on spinning nonaxisymmetric projectile configurations at Mach numbers of 2.5 to 6.0 are reported. The projectile shapes are ogive- cylinder bodies which have been modified by machining three forward facing surfaces and three rearward facing surfaces on the projectile. The machined surfaces are twisted at a rate corresponding to a typical rifling twist. The forward facing surfaces produce a helical or corkscrew type effect and the rearward surfaces form a nonconical boattail and a triangular base. The objective of the test program was to study shapes which have improved stability characteristics which require less gyroscopic stabilization. A more slender, longer L/d projectile can then be flown which has lower drag and shorter time of flight to a moving target.

Describes wind tunnel tests performed on three models at Mach numbers 2.0 to 4.0: a cone/cylinder with or without fins, and a generic flechette. Aerodynamic coefficients measurement tests were made for all configurations and surface pressure distribution tests were made with the cone/cylinder model without fins. The rationale for the test series was to compare results with those from similar tests performed at the Institut franco-allemand de recherches de St-Louis, France, with particular attention to the influence of Reynolds number.

The Encyclopedia of Aerodynamics was written for pilots at all levels from private pilot to airline pilot, military pilots and students of aerodynamics as a complete reference manual to aerodynamic terminology. General aerodynamic text books for pilots are relatively limited in their scope while aerodynamic text books for engineering students involve complex calculus. The references in this book, The Encyclopedia of Aerodynamics, are clearly described and only basic algebra is used in a few references but is completely devoid of any calculus - an advantage to many readers. Over 1400 references are included with alternative terms used where appropriate and cross-referenced throughout. The text is illustrated with 178 photographs and 96 diagrams. The Encyclopedia of Aerodynamics is an ideal aerodynamic reference manual for any pilot's bookshelf.

This textbook draws on the authors’ experience gained by teaching courses for engineering students on e.g. vehicle mechanics, vehicle system design, and chassis design; and on their practical experience as engineering designers for vehicle and chassis components at a major automotive company. The book is primarily intended for students of automotive engineering, but also for all technicians and designers working in this field. Other enthusiastic engineers will also find it to be a useful technical guide. The present volume (The Automotive Chassis – Volume 1: Component Design) focuses on automotive chassis components, such as:• the structure, which is usually a ladder framework and supports all the remaining components of the vehicle;• the suspension for the mechanical linkage of the wheels;• the wheels and tires;• the steering system;• the brake system; and• the transmission system, used to apply engine torque to the driving wheels. This thoroughly revised and updated second edition presents recent developments, particularly in brake, steering, suspension and transmission subsystems. Special emphasis is given to modern control systems and control strategies.
