It's no secret that congregations have conflict. Anyone who has served as a church leader knows about the friction that can take place within a congregation. And too much friction can lead to heated levels of infighting and strife. But used properly, can conflict really be a positive thing for your church? The direct result of George Bullard's twenty-five years of work in the area of training congregational and denominational leaders in various strategies to address conflict, this book empowers congregations to use conflict to deal with issues in a healthy and productive manner. In Every Congregation Needs a Little Conflict, Bullard guides church leaders in how to use conflict as a positive force for transition and change, and how to handle unhealthy conflict that might arise. The modern church in America is in trouble. Not only are churches splitting over doctrinal and policy issues, denominations are fragmenting over theological and social issues. It does not matter whether it is a traditional, contemporary, emerging, seeker friendly, or home church, conflict can and does happen. What is the underlying cause of this chaos? Is it demonic or just immature church members, or both? Most books on church conflict treat only the human aspect, but this book goes deeper and looks behind the scene at the real causes of conflict. Preachers need the prayers and encouragement of the people of God, and church members need a preacher who will not bend to denominational and personal pressure to compromise the Truth. Christ loves his bride (the Church) and will return to take her to Himself, but in the meantime, it is a mean time. Dr. Haughton draws heavily from his fifty years of experience as a pastor to illustrate how conflicts happen.

If church is like a family, it fights like one too! As in any family, conflict in the church family is natural and inevitable. But the way the church family handles its fights can make or break ministry. By using stories and examples of real problems at actual churches, Cosgrove and Hatfield have applied family-systems theory to help us identify the hidden structural boundaries in any group relationship. They show how the dynamics and 'family rules' operating in the informal family-like church system powerfully influence how church members relate to each other.

You love your work. You love the people--most of the time. They respect you, most of the time. You work together with colleagues, staff, and laity, with energy and enthusiasm, most of the time. But then something goes wrong: a word spoken in anger, a misunderstanding, and things turn sour. What do you do? How do you deal with conflict, whether it be long or short-term, low or high intensity? Conflict is a part of the human predicament, yet it need not define or control your ministry. This book is designed to help the reader ask certain key questions about the nature and scope of the conflict they are experiencing and, based on the answers to those questions, move beyond conflict. The author lays out the variety of responses to conflict, running the gamut from avoidance to accommodation to compromise to collaboration. Written with the real needs of congregations in mind, this book will serve as a reliable guide to all who wish to move through conflict into a more effective and authentic fulfillment of their calling.

There are several other books on the topic of conflict in the local congregation. They all make their contribution towards solutions to this problem. However, this brief work zeros in on specific happenings, how they affected the congregation and/or the minister, and are then followed by a denouement of each case. This book also suggests that in many cases there are practical remedies that from experience can be shown to work. Also included in this writing there are some general suggestions on how to approach the overall problem of such conflict in any church in which it may occur. As stated in the book, people are people. And as long as there are people there will be problems. But informed and fair handling can nearly always bring remedy or improvement. Even declaring a type of conflict unresolvable, and one party or the other walking away from it, is an improvement over continuous quarreling. Names of people and places are not used out of respect for the privacy of all concerned. About the Author The author, Cleon Spencer, has had a varied experience with people, both within and outside the church. So with a people oriented mindset, he seeks, in this his third book, to bring his experiences to a unique focus on trouble spots that frequently exist in the administration area of a local church. Hopefully the author's descriptions of these troubles will help bring about understanding of them, which in turn will make the troubles more treatable. This being so, the local church thus treated, will be more likely to go on to become a successful congregation; which is the goal and purpose of the book. It is the author's sincere desire that this book will be effective in the above stated manner.

The hurts of people often spill over into the life of the congregation causing conflict. Your chair of finance is going through a nasty divorce and is mad at God. The mother of one of your Sunday School teachers is chronically ill. A major factory in your community has relocated, taking with it many of your church members’ jobs. Some losses in your own life remain painful and unresolved. And you wonder why the church council meetings are so rancorous and your church is mired in unproductive conflict. What do you do? How should you lead? According to Lyon and Moseley, conflict is often about ungrieved loss. When conflict occurs, pastors and other church leaders must know how to be present in the dynamics of grieving loss, encouraging space for a new thing to emerge. With rich and helpful illustrations, this book reveals how leaders can understand group-wide dynamics of conflict, ground their leadership in the liturgical meanings and rhythms of church life, and accompany congregations through potentially destructive realities toward the creative possibilities that conflict can bring.
