This anthology examines university lecturers' experiences with pedagogical practices across various higher education disciplines. The experiences are investigated by means of reflective practice research - a phenomenological and hermeneutical approach intended to make implicit practical knowledge explicit, and thus to develop a deeper understanding of professional practices. While instrumental practice research gives a practitioner knowledge of facts, reflective practice research gives the practitioner orientational knowledge, in line with a so-called kaleidoscopic epistemology.

The title of this anthology mirrors the theme of the 9th Nordic Conference on Adult Education and Learning. The caption reflects how adult education plays an integral part in our societies by advancing new learning that generates possibilities to address contemporary challenges. While the chapters reflect the wide variety of research connected to the field of adult education, the authors agree on the ideal of combining the development of work life competences with the promotion of democratic empowerment, as demonstrated in the tradition of Nordic adult education.

"This dissertation pinpoints empathy deficit as a major social issue in the United States and it argues that schools could help address this root problem by offering humanity training. As an example of how humanity training could be implemented in higher education, "The Souls of Good Folk" is offered as a pedagogy of humanity for the composition classroom. This pedagogy uses Cornel West's derivative philosophy of prophetic pragmatism as a lens of cultural criticism and community action. Furthermore, the pedagogy employs W.E.B. Du Bois's The Souls of Black Folk as an example of prophetic pragmatism enacted in the real world. It expands Du Bois's trajectory from a focus on Blacks to a generalized "good folk." Du Bois's book is not used as a blueprint for social transformation, but analyzing it could inform ways of addressing social problems. "The Souls of Good Folk" critical pedagogy uses the word souls to represent people's actions and the phrase "good folk" to represent anyone who shows society what needs improving and possibly offer ways of doing it. Good folk include marginalized people, cultural workers, grassroots activists, teachers, artists, musicians, and others that help America see itself in efforts to make appropriate changes. The work of good folk is reviewed in this classroom as literature and tangible examples of how to enhance society. The composition classroom is the site for this pedagogy due to its focus on critical literacy -- actively and questioningly engaging with the text to read underlying messages -- which is needed to help solve social problems. Teaching through a prophetic pragmatist framework is critical academic work, for it helps produce responsible democratic citizens and it sustains local communities. The prophetic pragmatist classroom is an experiential learning laboratory that combines traditional teaching methods with progressive, hands-on approaches to make experience paramount to the learning process. The main objectives of this pedagogy are for students to understand social issues comprehensively and to find creative, empathetic ways of addressing these problems."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Teachers in school music ensembles (band, choir, orchestra) plan instruction that will lead to student learning—learning most often focused on technical skill development. The value of teaching students beyond technical proficiencies toward a broader body of knowledge and understanding is supported by the literature. A model exists that is designed to lead to a broader experience in school music ensembles, involving a multiplicity of music learnings, technical proficiency, cognition, and personal meaning constructed by the student. The Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) Model is a framework for planning instruction in school ensembles that promotes a holistic form of music learning . A detailed description of the CMP Model provides the foundation for a discussion of planning and implementation, as the model is enacted in the ensemble setting. The discrete planning points of the CMP Model are considered in relation to a broader context. Interviews are included as a contextual narrative piece to humanize the material throughout the book. By combining the theoretical foundations of CMP and its practical applications for the teacher, this book will be useful for scholars and persons involved in teacher education as well as practicing teacher-conductors.

This book shows the continuing importance of art education. Art education attracts students who see multiple meanings and justifications for the worth of that education. Their engagement in art education is not limited to the uncertain prospects for jobs or routes into employment in the arts. Fürst and Nylander approach art education through a rich array of empirical examples derived from Swedish folk high school programs in music, visual arts, and creative writing. Based on an analytical framework of pragmatic sociology, the book allows the reader to understand the competences and critical capacities held by students and teachers. The book challenges the dominant public perception of art education and broadens our understanding of what it is good for. The Value of Art Education is essential reading for those defending the status of this vital sector of education, offering a deeper understanding of why people engage, what they gain, and the social importance of the arts.
