The Pentecostal Church in Latin America has experienced extraordinary growth. With its development across a multiplicity of countries and groups one cannot speak of a single description encompassing Pentecostal expression and life. It would be more accurate to speak of “Pentecostalisms.” This study describes from a Latin American Assemblies of God view point what it means to be “Pentecostal.” This study explores the meaning of being “Pentecostal,” and considers the theological implications and the praxis of being “Pentecostal” within the context of Latin America. The history of the Pentecostal faith in Latin America as well as social science literature are reviewed. The study utilizes Q-Methodology to ascertain what the understanding of the Latin American leadership of the Assemblies of God Pentecostal looks like theologically and in praxis. Members of FRAHMAD—Fraternidad Hispana Mundial de las Asambleas de Dios (Global Hispanic Fraternity of the Assemblies of God) ranked fortynine statements considering the meaning of being “Pentecostal.” In addition, a sampling of North Americans who fit the characteristics of new missionaries going to Latin America serving as a comparison group did the same. The research revealed that for the Latin American leadership of the Assemblies of God being “Pentecostal,” above all else, is to experience the baptism of the Holy Spirit with accompanying tongues. This baptism further holds to global evangelism through Spirit-led and Spirit-empowered ministry. The US participants hold the view that the baptism of the Spirit brings a believer a greater personal and corporate (church) development. They did not rank tongues at the same priority and did not connect the baptism to evangelism as strongly as the Latin Americans. The groups benefiting from the research include national church leaders (Latin America and USA), missionaries, pastors and Bible School teachers. Those outside of this defined arena would have much to glean as well. This study provides an analysis of the views of both the Latin Americans and the North Americans informing the reader of each groups respective understanding of what it means to be “Pentecostal.” This study interacts with what the New Testament Literature offers as to what it means to be “Pentecostal.” It responds to how the contextual factors inform what it means to be “Pentecostal.”
