Environmental information is important for successful planning and execution of naval operations. A thorough understanding of environmental variability greatly increases the likelihood of mission success. To ensure that naval forces have the most up-to-date capabilities, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) has an extensive environmental research program. This research, to be of greatest use to the warfighter, needs to be directed towards assisting and solving battlefield problems. To increase research community understanding of the operational demands placed on naval operators and to facilitate discussion between these two groups, the National Research Council's (NRC) Ocean Studies Board (OSB), working with ONR and the Office of the Oceanographer of the Navy, convened five previous symposia on tactical oceanography. Oceanography and Mine Warfare examines the following issues: (1) how environmental data are used in current mine warfare doctrine, (2) current procedures for in situ collection of data, (3) the present capabilities of the Navy's oceanographic community to provide supporting information for mine warfare operations, and (4) the ability of oceanographic research and technology developments to enhance current mine warfare capabilities. This report primarily concentrates on the importance of oceanographic data for mine countermeasures.

• Draw Your Weapons is essential reading in a time of global upheaval—a unique, impassioned and vital guide to peaceful, creative resistance in a violent era • A dazzling combination of memoir, history, reporting, visual culture, literature and theology which proposes that art can offer the tools for remaking the world • Centres on the stories of two very different men—one a former-soldier stationed at Abu Ghraib, and a consciencious objector from World War II. Both men respond to war, and reclaim their dignity, by making art • Sentilles almost became an episcopal priest. She holds a Doctorate of Theology from Harvard Divinity School and her ‘break-up with God’ was the subject of an earlier book • Sentilles is also the co-creator of Drone Alert Sutras, a project that prompts participants to create video responses to US drone attacks as they happen • Will appeal to fans of Rebecca Solnit, John Berger and Ta-Nehisi Coates

Throw away your throat-slitting SEAL operations and involve yourself in a mission possible. A brainchild of a woman known by the code name Tahoe. There are three simple words behind the letters STC, and they are the cornerstone that thrusts an elite group into today’s political and big business arenas. Called on to defuse high-intensity situations, they have no intention of slitting anybody’s throat, even though they learned how to do it. They’re not spies or secret service and don’t consider themselves killers. They are not civil servants or attachés. There is no supervised rank. They are unique. Group intelligence is their sharpest weapon.

An in-depth reference to the naval weapons used by Britain, Germany, the US, and the other combatants in the Great War, with photos: “Superb…invaluable.”—History of War Although the Great War might be regarded as the heyday of the big-gun at sea, it also saw the maturing of underwater weapons, the mine and torpedo, as well as the first signs of the future potency of air power. Between 1914 and 1918 weapons development was both rapid and complex, so this book has two functions: on the one hand it details all the guns, torpedoes, mines, aerial bombs and anti-submarine systems employed during that period; but it also seeks to explain the background to their evolution: how the weapons were perceived at the time and how they were actually used. This involves a discussion of tactics and emphasizes the key enabling technology of fire control and gun mountings. In this respect, the book treats the war as a transition from naval weapons which were essentially experimental at its outbreak to a state where they pointed directly to what would be used in World War II. Based largely on original research, this sophisticated book is more than a catalogue of the weapons, offering insight into some of the most important technical and operational factors influencing the war at sea.
