We Take Care of Our Own traces the evolution of Bruce Springsteen’s beliefs, beginning with his New Jersey childhood and ending with his most recent works from Springsteen on Broadway to Letter to You. The author follows the singer’s life, examining his albums and a variety of influences (both musical and nonmusical), especially his Catholic upbringing and his family life, to show how he became an outspoken icon for working-class America—indeed for working-class life throughout the world. In this way, the author emphasizes the universality of Springsteen’s canon and depicts how a working-class sensibility can apply to anyone anywhere who believes in fairness and respect. In addition, the author places Springsteen in the historical context not only of literature (especially John Steinbeck) but also of the art world (specifically the work of Thomas Hart Benton and Edward Hopper). Among the themes explored in the book include community, a sense of place, America as the Promised Land, the myth of the West, and, ultimately, mortality.

Mixing personal history, interviewee voices, and academic theory from the fields of care work, the sociology of work, medical sociology, and nursing, Taking Care of Our Own introduces us to the hidden world of family caregivers. Using a multidimensional approach, Sherry N. Mong seeks to understand and analyze the types of skilled work that family caregivers do, the processes through which they learn and negotiate new skills, and the meanings that both caregivers and nurses attach to their care work. Taking Care of Our Own is based on sixty-two in-depth interviews with family caregivers, home and community health care nurses, and other expert observers to provide a lens through which in-home care processes are analyzed, while also exploring how caregivers learn necessary procedures. Further, Mong examines the emotional labor of caregiving, as well as the identities of caregivers and nurses who are key players in the labor process, and gives attention to the ways in which the labor is transferred from medical professionals to family caregivers.

As internal division threatens the United States' ability to defend itself, USoFA WorldWide-a "supraconglomerate" of the nation's largest military, energy, and media providers-has stepped in to conduct a more efficient, more profitable War on Terror. In its effort to silence growing popular dissent, USoFA WorldWide launches SoldierWell, an experimental therapy that aims to co-opt the violent impulses of traumatized veterans to incite Intentional Mass Casualty Incidents, otherwise known as mass shootings. Combining "found" psychotherapy session transcripts with exacting prose, WE TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN tracks the progress of third-year medical student Linda Held's struggle to suppress her conscience and fulfill Company orders to their savage, terrifying end. "Clancy imagines a world a half-shade darker than our own, where money replaces empathy and those who pull the strings wreck us simply because they can." - John Minichillo, author of The Message in the Sky and First Woman on Mars "The world gave us Orwell, Bradbury, and Vonnegut, and now it has given us the bayonet- sharp vision of Christopher Clancy, who has engineered a novel so vital to the American ethos that everyone-from casual reader to anthropologist-should take heed. We Take Care of Our Own marks the arrival of a masterful storyteller." - Nathan Elias, author of The Reincarnations and Coil Quake Rift "Clancy has absolutely captured both the humanity and absurdity of insurgency war-fighting as experienced by the troops. This book is entertaining as hell but also a deep dive into the heads of the men who return from war. It could change your relationship to the country's war vets." - Trish Wood, author of What Was Asked of Us and host of Trish Wood is Critical podcast "Clancy's novel is sharp, fast, and very stylish. An exhilarating psychological thriller that ensnares, beguiles, and, ultimately, breaks your heart." - Paul Meloy, author of Islington Crocodiles

Is money precious and scarce, necessitating iron fiscal discipline? Must the government always balance the books or risk ruin? Or is money, in fact, a flexible tool that can be used to mobilize our collective resources to serve those who need them? In this book, leading Modern Money Theory (MMT) advocate Randy Wray explains that the only real constraints on public policy are physical resources, technological capacity and political will: but never money. He shows how modern sovereign governments spend by keystroking money to bank accounts. While taxes serve other important purposes, they do not – contrary to popular belief – fund spending. If we recognize this, and totally reframe how we think about money and debt, we can marshal our national wealth to make us all richer, eliminate unemployment and “look after our own.” We can make money work for us – the US. This book's account shows how MMT can become a new American political and economic orthodoxy, replacing the dominant conservative framework forever. It is essential reading for all progressives.

The founder of the Black Doctors Consortium highlights the devastating racial injustices in our healthcare system in this inspirational memoir and empowering call to action. Dr. Ala Stanford knew she wanted to be a doctor by the time she was eight years old. But role models were few and far between in her working-class North Philly neighborhood. Her teachers were dismissive, and the realities of racism, sexism, and poverty threatened to derail her at every turn. Nevertheless, thanks to her faith, family, and the sheer strength of her will, today she is one of the vanishingly small number of Black women surgeons in America—and an unrelenting force in the fight for health justice. In Take Care of Them Like My Own, Dr. Stanford shares an unflinching account of her story, explaining how her experiences on both sides of the scalpel have informed her understanding of America’s racial health gap, an insidious and lethal form of inequality that exacts a devastating toll on Black communities across the country, affluent and underserved alike. When Covid-19 arrived in her hometown of Philadelphia, she knew it would disproportionately affect the Black population. As the city stood idly by, unwilling or unable to protect its most vulnerable citizens, Dr. Stanford took matters into her own hands. She rented a van, made some calls, and began administering tests in church parking lots. Soon, she found herself at the helm of a powerful grassroots campaign that successfully vaccinated tens of thousands of Philadelphians. She and her movement are living proof that by drawing on faith, community, and inner strength, everyday people can affect tremendous change. Part memoir, part manifesto for health equality and justice, Take Care of Them Like My Own offers urgent lessons about the power of communities working together to take care of one another and the importance of fighting for a healthcare system that truly fulfills its promise to all Americans.
