General George Joulwan played a role in many pivotal world events during his long and exceptional career. Present at both the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, he served multiple tours in Germany during the Cold War and two tours in Vietnam. By chance, he was recruited as Nixon's White House deputy chief of staff and witnessed the last acts of the Watergate drama first-hand. He went on to lead US Southern Command—fighting insurgencies and the drug war in Latin America—and was Supreme Allied Commander of NATO forces in Europe (SACEUR) during the Rwandan genocide and the Bosnian peacekeeping missions of the 1990s. Joulwan chronicles his career in the upper echelons of the armed forces. He shares his experiences working with major military and political figures, including generals William E. DePuy, Alexander Haig, John Vessey, and Colin Powell, US ambassador Richard Holbrooke, and presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton. Beyond the battlefield, Joulwan became an advocate for military and civilian relations during the Vietnam War, deescalating several high-intensity situations while studying at Loyola University as part of the US Army's Option C program. Watchman at the Gates merges memory and lessons in leadership as Joulwan pays tribute to his teachers and colleagues and explains the significance of their influence on his personal approach to command. As a leader of combat troops in Vietnam, he appealed to his subordinates on an individual basis, taking time to build relationships that proved vital to the effectiveness of his commands. He also reveals how similar relationships of mutual understanding were crucial in his peaceful and productive dealings with both allies and enemies. At its heart, this inspiring memoir is a soldier's story—written by a warrior who saw defending his country and the democratic values it stands for as his highest calling. Featuring a foreword by Tom Brokaw, Watchman at the Gates offers incredible insights into world events as well as valuable lessons for a new generation of leaders.

The Watchman's Book by Watchman of Day of Night "When I bring an army against a country, the people of that land choose a watchman. When the watchman sees the enemy coming, he blows the alarm to warn the people." - Ezekiel 33:2-3 (New Living Translation) Many were considering our time as the last days-the period that Christians associate with the signs of the end of the systems of things, where the Devil pulls the last of his strings to create chaos, bewilderment, discouragement, and eventual falling from the faith or being misled from the faith. It is a period prior to Judgment Day where people all over the world, including Christians, are made to stand before God and Jesus Christ, to be declared as either righteous, therefore, getting a reward, or unrighteous and thus getting the retribution. For the last days, like being in battle, God appointed Watchman of Day and of the Nightas one of His watchmen to warn the people of the impending judgment so that they may repent and eventually be saved from the wrath of God and the punishment that comes with it. One of his commission is to write a compilation of 1,240 verses from the different books of the Bible, which God had chosen Himself in a span of thirty-three years. The Watchman's Book, according to the author, is the last warning offered by God before the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. About the Author The author was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and grew up doing farm work. He emancipated himself from home at the age of thirteen and married at the age of seventeen. Right after his marriage, he started to learn welding, which became his job for forty-five years.

A call to be a "Watchman" is a call that every child of God must answer to wherever you find yourself every day. "Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman for Israel. Whenever you receive a message from me, warn people immediately" (Ezekiel 3:17, NLT). Too many times we have thought of the work of a "Spiritual Watchman" to be that of only men and women on various prayer walls. While prayer is one of the key duties of the "Watchman," we must also understand that there is MORE to fulfilling this mandate. This book seeks to help us understand that the call of the "Watchman" is a call that every child of God must answer to wherever you find yourself each and every day.

The title was selected on the basis of the soon-to-unfold Great Tribulation Period. The purpose of the title is to attract an interest in the reply that the watchman gave: "I see the dawn coming, and also a Night!" It is this approaching "Night" which represents the judgments of God and the wrath of man that will unfold.

Ancient Jerusalem was protected by sturdy stone walls that allowed the watchmen to maintain close observation of those coming and going through the city gates. Therefore, the gates were of utmost importance. If a gate were neglected or torn down, anyone could come into the city unchecked. And those within the walls could venture out of the city to their own destruction. The task of the watchmen, then, was critical to the security of the city. No one could enter or exit without their knowledge. So it is with our lives. The gates of our heart must be carefully guarded to assure the right things come into and go out of our heart. This study defines twelve "gates" or entry/exit points of our heart. Each of these must be carefully guarded.
