This thesis explores virtual art therapy and describes how art therapists in the United States are adapting their practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the method of constructivist grounded theory, I analyze qualitative interviews with art therapists who have practiced teletherapy from 2020-2021. Results of the research indicate that by conducting teletherapy, art therapists have been thinking about therapeutic space, accessibility, materials, and client-therapist power dynamics in new ways. To conclude, I offer suggestions and raise ethical considerations for online art therapy practice.

Download Insights for a Tele-art Therapy Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
In-person therapies have been greatly impacted by the pandemic during the year 2020. Remote works and teletherapy have become the new trend due to the physical restraints COVID-19 poses to health. Art Therapists use different online platforms and tools to support their remote work, but none of them were originally designed for art therapy. Therefore, this project is aimed at providing helpful and inspirational insights for art therapists and emerging art therapists who are interested in the field of telehealth. It will work to conceptualize a virtual tool that is specifically designed for art therapists and tele-art therapy sessions. The insights will be collected through interviews with art therapists and graduate art therapy students who have experience working remotely or are currently practicing remote art therapies.
