This thesis presents a fluid model for electron behavior in the near-exit plume of a Hall thruster. The model provides 3D results and allows to study the azimuthal asymmetry induced by the hollow cathode. The model is composed by the charge and energy conservation equations and is intended to solve for the electrostatic potential and the electron temperature. It relies on the results of an external model for the ion behavior. The fluid equations are diffusive and are justified in the limit of small electron Larmor radius. They include the Hall transport, which is usually ignored in 2D approaches due to symmetry. The transport along magnetic field lines is high enough to convert the 3D problem into a 2D problem, where only the directions perpendicular to the magnetic field matter. In such a 2D formulation, the basic structure of the solution for the potential is studied analytically, with the result that the lines of constant potential can be approximately predicted. The potential can be found numerically after transforming the charge conservation equation into a convective-diffusive equation. The numerical results agree approximately with analytical predictions. The results suggest that the asymmetry induced by the hollow cathode mainly depend on how much the cathode perturbs the plasma density distribution.

In order to aid in the design of high-power Hall thrusters and provide experimental validation for existing modeling efforts, plasma potential and Langmuir probe measurements were performed in the near-field plume of the NASA 300M Hall thruster. A probe array consisting of a Faraday probe, Langmuir probe, and emissive probe was used to interrogate the plume from approximately 0.1 - 2.0 DT, m downstream of the thruster exit plane at four operating conditions: 300 V, 400 V, and 500 V at 20 kW as well as 300 V at 10 kW. Results show that the acceleration zone and high-temperature region were contained within 0.3 DT, m from the exit plane at all operating conditions. Isothermal lines were shown to strongly follow magnetic field lines in the nearfield, with maximum temperatures ranging from 19 - 27 eV. The electron temperature spatial distribution created large drops in measured floating potentials in front of the magnetic pole surfaces where the plasma density was small, which suggests strong sheaths at these surfaces. The data taken have provided valuable information for future design and modeling validation, and complements ongoing internal measurement efforts on the NASA 300

The discussions and plans on all scienti?c, advisory, and political levels to realize an even larger “European Supercomputer” in Germany, where the hardware costs alone will be hundreds of millions Euro – much more than in the past – are getting closer to realization. As part of the strategy, the three national supercomputing centres HLRS (Stuttgart), NIC/JSC (Julic ̈ h) and LRZ (Munich) have formed the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) as a new virtual organization enabled by an agreement between the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the state ministries for research of Baden-Wurttem ̈ berg, Bayern, and Nordrhein-Westfalen. Already today, the GCS provides the most powerful high-performance computing - frastructure in Europe. Through GCS, HLRS participates in the European project PRACE (Partnership for Advances Computing in Europe) and - tends its reach to all European member countries. These activities aligns well with the activities of HLRS in the European HPC infrastructure project DEISA (Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Appli- tions) and in the European HPC support project HPC-Europa. Beyond that, HLRS and its partners in the GCS have agreed on a common strategy for the installation of the next generation of leading edge HPC hardware over the next ?ve years. The University of Stuttgart and the University of Karlsruhe have furth- more agreed to bundle their competences and resources.
