It is possible that a given lot of ammunition fired at the same aim point by two different tanks will produce center of (shot) impacts, COIs, that differ in magnitude by several times the lot's dispersion. It is difficult to discern what fraction of this variation is due to barrel differences, alone, since changing tubes alters both the mounting conditions and the occasion. A means has been devised to 'change tubes' without altering the mount, or the occasion, by merely changing the shape of a given tube within the same mount. This is accomplished by localized control of the barrel's axial thermal expansion, implemented through a series of temperature-controlled heating pads adhered to the outer barrel wall. Using this technique, it was found that a simple, yet very common, bow-shaped curvature to the right vs. left, for example, produced a significant shift in the COl, the magnitude of which was on the order of the ammunition dispersion. In particular, inducing a right bow moved the muzzle to the left, as expected, but had the opposite, and perhaps unexpected, effect on the shot impacts--moving them to the right. Conversely, forming a left bow moved the muzzle to the right and the shot impacts to the left. An attempt to gain an understanding of the observed COl-centerline dependence through modeling the effects of projectile-barrel interaction (using the gun dynamics code Rascal) did not succeed. It appears that a more comprehensive model is needed before a predicative capability is possible.

For some ammunition types, the projectile impact location appears to be gun tube dependent, even though the aim point, barrel mount, and ammunition lot may be the same. It is thought that such barrel dependency is due to manufactured differences in the straightness of each tube. To test this hypothesis, we have devised a means to reversibly control the centerline curvature of a gun tube. This preliminary report describes how a series of heating pads, adhered to the external surface of the barrel, can be used to change the bore centerline curvature. Several centerline alterations are demonstrated on a 120-mm M256 tank cannon. The theoretical prediction for each of several heat-pad-induced centerline changes compares favorably with borescope measurements of the muzzle angle change and dial-indicator measurements of the outer-wall barrel displacement. Future gun firings of this temperature-controlled barrel will be used to examine the correlation between shot impact location and centerline curvature.

During firing, the gun barrel centerline profile and muzzle pointing angle change due to thermal distortion. There are several causes of thermal distortion; we will discuss two: uneven cooling, and non-uniform wall thickness. We will briefly explain the mechanisms by which these two effects produce gun barrel bending and describe how these effects are modeled. We will demonstrate our model by predicting the muzzle pointing angle change for a particular gun tube firing five rounds, one every two minutes. The predictions are compared with experimental results; some agreement is noted.

When a gun is elevated or depressed from horizontal, the component of gravity perpendicular to the gun axis is diminished, resulting in a decreased gravity-induced droop of the muzzle angle. The fire control algorithm for the MIAI tank does not take this change in gravity droop into account when it computes the gun elevation required to engage a distant target. We show that this source of aiming inaccuracy is small, but easily predictable, and hence correctable. Gravity, Droop, Fire control, Elevation, Accuracy, Modeling, Gun, Barrel, Bend.

Ammunition, Demystified is Hatcher’s Notebook for the twenty-first century. It’s a “soft” technical document intended for small caliber ammunition design and production engineers, as well as more advanced shooters and reloaders who want a more in-depth understanding of how guns and ammunition work and interact with one another. There is very little that is truly simple about small arms ammunition due to the enormous stresses to which the bullet and cartridge case structures are subjected during the firing process and the nonlinear material properties of these ammunition components. Ammunition Demystified untangles these interactions and will help put you on the path of increased understanding of a simple yet complex topic. This book encapsulates the technical knowledge acquired on bullets, cartridge cases, barrels, and ammunition testing over a career spanning four decades. It is a useful reference for shooters, reloaders, and “ammo guys” to assist them when they troubleshoot the mechanical and dispersion performance of their firearms and ammunition. Ammunition Demystified topics covered are • cartridge cases and case-chamber interaction • propellants and interior ballistics • projectile design, aerodynamics, and stability • trajectory, dispersion, accuracy • barrel: manufacture, fatigue life • ammunition: pressure and velocity testing, and load development www.bulletology.com
