This investigation is concerned with the occurrence of periodic oscillations in the compressible flow of gases through supersonic nozzles with heat addition due to condensation of vapors by homogeneous nucleation. The experimental work focuses on the influence of the ratio of the specific heats of the carrier gas, the dimensionless latent heat, and the Damkohler number on the dimensionless frequency of the fluctuating flow. The investigation is carried out in a Ludwieg tube, taking advantage of the increase of supply relative humidity with constant specific humidity over three flow periods.

Unsteady transonic flows induced by the heat released during condensation of water vapor near the throat of a converging-diverging nozzle have been observed by Wegener and Cagliostro (1973) among others. Unsteady transonic flows with heating may also arise in air blast circuit breakers and in various processes involving the flow of chemically reactive gases. A theory for such flows is developed. The flow is shown to be isentropic and irrotational to first order. Small disturbance potential equations are derived. The oscillatory flows observed by Wegener and Cagliostro are shown to fall in the slowly time varying regime. An exact solution of the slowly time varying equations is found for flow near the throat of a nozzle with uniformly distributed oscillatory Joule heating.

Periodic, unsteady, compressible nozzle flow caused by heat addition due to condensation in the transonic region is investigated. The experiments were performed in an intermittent tube wind-tunnel. Flow with varying expansion rates, relative and specific humidities, pressures, and temperatures were studied. Measurements were made by pressure and temperature recordings, streak interferograms and high-speed shadowgraph movies. A dimensional analysis that relates the frequency of the cyclic flow to the supply conditions and cooling rate was performed, and correlated with the measurements. Based on a linear approximation, possible solutions of the equations of motion for steady, transonic, diabatic, inviscid flow in the throat region of a nozzle are discussed.

This volume contributes to one of the most important topics of Fluid Mechanics in future and presents recent research results on control theory and applied control methods. Understanding and handling of control methods of nonlinear systems, typical of Fluid Mechanics, is the key to reduce losses and to improve the efficiency and safety of technical processes.

This book offers a timely reference on shock waves in multiphase flows, including new viewpoints and burgeoning developments. This volume treats shock and expansion waves in complex, bubbly liquids and cryogenic liquids. It also examines the relationship of shock waves with phase transitions and induced phase transitions as well as their interaction with solid foams, textiles, porous and granular media.

This new book leads readers step-by-step through the complexities encountered as moving objects approach and cross the sound barrier. The problems of transonic flight were apparent with the very first experimental flights of scale-model rockets when the disastrous impact of shock waves and flow separations caused the aircraft to spin wildly out of control. Today many of these problems have been overcome, and this book offers an introduction to the transonic theory that has made possible many of these advances. The emphasis is on the most important basic approaches to the solution of transonic problems. The book also includes explanations of common pitfalls that must be avoided. An effort has been made to derive the most important equations of inviscid and viscous transonic flow in sufficient detail so that even novices may feel confident in their problem-solving ability. The use of computer approaches is reviewed, with references to the extensive literature in this area, while the critical shortcomings of an exclusive reliance on computational methods are also described. The book will be valuable to anyone who needs to acquire an understanding of transonic flow, including practicing engineers as well as students of fluid mechanics.
