One major problem facing society today is accessibility for the physically disabled. There is a crucial need to increase awareness of accessibility issues that people with physical disabilities face and to address their needs. In this society of mass production, providers are always looking for that which is easily reproduced and benefits them the most. Unfortunately, manufacturers see the accessibility problems as insignificant, mainly because the disabled are so misunderstood. They are also unaware of the positive impact this could have on the industry. the notion that the disabled are not a wide market is a misnomer. the focus of this dissertation is to address the problem of accessibility and to offer an easily adoptable design solution through the concept of Universal Design, which can be defined as the design of products and environments that can be used and experienced by people of all ages and abilities, to the greatest extent possible without adaptation. the accessible design is a design that targets small groups with specific disability problems. Universal Design is not a specialized design field for one special group, it accommodates the needs of everyone while addressing the needs of those who may have disabilities. the goal of this research is to increase the awareness about the necessity of using a universal design approach to product development and to offer a new model called Integrated Universal Design that builds upon the existing principles of Universal Design. This dissertation has been divided into six chapters. the first three chapters include the history of accessible legislations, accessible design and adoptable designs, the meaning of "Universal Design". Chapters four and five include two case studies that were conducted based on the new model of Integrated Universal Design. the first one deals with bathroom designs, and the other one deals with home furniture through the design of closets. Conclusions and recommendations for Integrated Universal Design can be found in the last chapter.
