This volume is a collection of papers presented at the Ninth International Symposium on "Ultrafast Processes in Spectroscopy" (UPS '95) held at the International Centre for Theo retical Physics (ICTP), Trieste (Italy), October 30 -November 3, 1995. These meetings have become recognized as the major forum in Europe for discussion of new work in this rapidly moving field. The UPS'95 Conference in Trieste brought together a multidisciplinary group of researchers sharing common interests in the generation of ultrashort optical pulses and their application to studies of ultrafast phenomena in physics, chemistry, material science, electronics, and biology. It was attended by approximately 250 participants from 20 countries and the five-day program comprises more than 200 papers. The progress of both technology and applications in the field of ultrafast processes during these last years is truly remarkable. The advent of all solid state femtosecond lasers and the extension of laser wavelengths by frequency conversion techniques provide a large variety of high-performance light sources for ultrashort pulses. With these sources ultrafast phenomena in physical, chemical and biological systems and in electronic de vi(:es are now studied extensively. Ultrafast technology is becoming one of the basic and common tools presently entering a wide variety of scientific fields not only for basic re search but also for promoting new applications in various areas. We feel that these pro ceedings vividly reflect the present status of the field.

A new series of lively, late-night panel discussions were introduced at this meeting, re flecting the maturing of the field into applications, while at the same time keeping a strong interest in fundamentals. This volume is a collection of papers presented at the Fifteenth International Conference on Ultrafast Phenomena held at the Asilomar Conference Grounds, Pacifc Grove, CA, USA, from July 31 – August 4, 2006. The Ultrafast P- nomena conferences are held every two years and provide a forum for disc- sion of the latest results in ultrafast optics and their applications in science and engineering. These meetings bring together researchers spanning several felds of science and engineering to discuss and debate the latest advances in ult- fast science. This unique forum provides a conduit for the greater dissemi- tion of the latest advances using ultrashort coherent pulses of light. More than 280 papers were presented. Signifcant progress in creating ever shorter pulses of light was reported in the attosecond range, with new applications in high harmonic generation and frequency comb metrology. Multidimensional sp- troscopy is rapidly evolving to provide new insights into quantum coherence and interactions in complex systems. Improvements in time resolved electron and x-ray diffraction provide better atomic scale perspectives on structural dynamics. These examples are but a small subset of the collected works ga- ered in this volume, which provides a valuable synopsis of the recent advances and impact of ultrafast technology in illuminating fundamental processes in physics, chemistry, and biology. There were 323 attendees at the meeting, more than one third of which were graduate and postdoctoral students. Increased s- dent attendance energized the proceedings.

Time-resolved optical spectroscopy has developed rapidly in recent years, and the development of various types of lasers for ultrashort light pulses has enabled spectroscopists to increase the temporal resolution to the picosecond, and even femtosecond, range. The field of ultrafast spectroscopy, while still in its early stages, is evolving rapidly and a compilation of methods and results, their classification and critical evaluation is therefore greatly in demand. This book meets that need by summarizing and classifying current knowledge on the application of ultrafast optical methods in photophysics, photochemistry, photobiology and other related fields. Written in textbook style, it begins with a short summary and discussion of the relevant methods and devices, ranging from millisecond flash photolysis to femtosecond devices, and covering the detection of short-lived intermediates by time-resolved Raman spectroscopy. This is followed by a detailed description of data analysis and interpretation of results for various experimental methods. The authors discuss very thoroughly the precision of experimental data, the potential of data-acquisition systems and the necessity of combining various experimental methods in order to investigate complex processes. Applications are discussed from the point of view of scientists interested in the detection and investigation of (photo)reactions by means of time-resolved optical methods.
