Translating the Female Self across Cultures examines contemporary autobiographical narratives and their Italian and French translations. This dissertation argues that a transcultural representation of the female body can be seen in the fiction and self-translations of Eileen Chang (1920-1995) through the processes of implicit re-evaluation and explicit re-contextualization. Chang's fiction and self-translations have a paradoxical relationship. Her self-translations "represent" the translated texts in their renditions of plots and characters, but the later versions do not completely "reproduce" the earlier texts. The different versions are interdependent, rather than isolated or independent, thus producing complementary meaning. The distinguished advantage of Chang's self-translations is obviously her privileged access to her authorial intention, thus making her self-translations her own re-interpretations produced from her specific ethnic, gender, class, and cultural positions. Empowered by the copyright law of droit moral or right of personality, Chang enjoys both legal and moral freedom in translating her own works. Chinese traditions under transformation and Western ideas imported into Chinese society are spelled out, though differently, in the Chinese and English texts.Chang's fiction and their self-translations at once incorporate and challenge multiple cultural influences on the representations of the female body. With reference to the Chinese understanding of the term "body," I argue that the representations of the female body constructed in Chang's works are not restricted to the beauty of women's outward appearance, but also refer to their appreciated inner qualities, and the ways they interact with other people and the world. Traces of Western representations of the female body regulated by social norms and practices through materialization, reiteration and performance are reflected in Chang's works, thus revealing much about gender relations in China in the twentieth century. While her earlier works tend to perpetuate Confucian doctrines of women's conduct, her later ones present more of a transcultural image of women's power to provoke and offer more possibilities for female transgression. A homogeneous and stable image of the female body gives way to a heterogeneous and dynamic one in Chang's self-translations, thus suggesting a reconstitution of the female body as a valuable site of meaning. These changes, not surprisingly, coincide with her move to the United States and her own personal broadened cultural context.
