Although we may not be able to modify, or in the slightest degree vary these changes, yet by a careful comparison of observations, made at many stations, through long periods, we may arrive at a knowledge of this probable succession in the future; be able, in some instances, to foretel disastrous changes in time to prepare for them, and so to plan our Operations as to secure the greatest advantages attainable.
