Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ...to be given every half-hour until the bowels moved or six grains had been taken; a thirtieth of strychnin was administered every three hours hypodermatically and half an ounce of panopeptone given by mouth. To-day, the fifth day after the operation, the patent's pulse and temperature are normal and I believe she cau safely be considered out of danger. I will now show you the tumor. You will see it is about the size of an adult's head, that about one-half of it was filled with a blood clot, which was due to the rupture of one of the large veins about the time of the attack of cholera morbus. It is my belief that the violent retching caused the tumor to become twisted at the pedicle or forced down into the pelvis, constricting the veins and causing the rupture of these vessels, at the same time so thoroughly filling the space, as to cause sufficient pressure on the bowel to produce the obstruction. July 5, 1899--Patient has completely recovered from the operation. DISCUSSION. Dr. F. W. Parham said that he had been strongly impressed with the advantage of the rectal examination; he had been able to introduce his hand up to...
