Excerpt from Thurston Genealogies: 1635-1892 My original design for publishing the second edition of Thurston Genealogies was to reproduce all that the first edition contained, with such additions as I have been able to collect. But the additions were so voluminous I found it necessary to leave out the wills, lengthy history of individuals, and some historical matter, amounting to one hundred and thirteen pages, which appeared in the first edition. In all such cases, however, I have referred to the omissions in foot notes, giving the page where they can be found. The number of these references being nearly one hundred, shows that both volumes will be required to make the history complete. Since publishing the first edition I have ascertained where the family of Moses Thurston of Hollis originated, and have incorporated it with the Daniel family, where it belongs. Numerous other families have found their ancestors, and appear in connection. I am satisfied that the families of Daniel and John were relatives, tho unable to connect them. I have a collection of over two hundred photographs from the principal families represented in this volume, and a critical examination strengthens my belief that they are all kin to each other. There are certain characteristics that run thro the whole. The facial contour and general make-up are singularly alike. Then again the mental development, aims of life, religious character, and family names, all tend to strengthen the opinion that they are homogeneous, and sprang from one root. The book is not a mere collection of names and dates, but in every case where it was possible the business, residence and religion is given, making it a readable book as well as one of reference. The seventeen years that I have spent upon this work have given me such an interest in it that I shall still keep an interleaved book for corrections and additions as long as I live, and sincerely request every one to send me all such information, so that one record may be complete. There are 10,520 names of Thurstons and their children indexed, which does not include those who died under two years of age. Other names indexed, 17,976.
