“This exceptional book makes several key contributions to the field and shows how freedom and anxiety, and the market and morality, tensely coexist in the business of sex. . . . Kelly's analysis is conveyed through vivid portraits of the lives of sex workers, showing that the women involved are neither victims nor heroines but something else: actors caught between agency and constraint.”—Roger N. Lancaster, author of The Trouble with Nature “In this tour de force of feminist anthropology, Patty Kelly gives her heart to the remarkable women who toil in the bawdy sweatshops of the Zona Galactica, a 'reformed' red-light district in the Chiapas capital of Tuxtla Gutiérrez. In fact, as Kelly shows, it is just the ultimate low-wage industrial district.”—Mike Davis, author of Planet of Slums and In Praise of Barbarians “The clarity of Kelly's perspective is neither apologetic, nor presumptive (as is usually the case); her focus is always on the political context of these women's lives. Patty Kelly writes like a poet and novelist, so much so that this work begs to be a movie.”—Carol Leigh, a.k.a. “Scarlot Harlot,” author of Unrepentant Whore

A new history of school desegregation in America, revealing how girls and women led the fight for interracial education The struggle to desegregate America's schools was a grassroots movement, and young women were its vanguard. In the late 1940s, parents began to file desegregation lawsuits with their daughters, forcing Thurgood Marshall and other civil rights lawyers to take up the issue and bring it to the Supreme Court. After the Brown v. Board of Education ruling, girls far outnumbered boys in volunteering to desegregate formerly all-white schools. In A Girl Stands at the Door, historian Rachel Devlin tells the remarkable stories of these desegregation pioneers. She also explains why black girls were seen, and saw themselves, as responsible for the difficult work of reaching across the color line in public schools. Highlighting the extraordinary bravery of young black women, this bold revisionist account illuminates today's ongoing struggles for equality.

One of The New York Times Book Review's "10 Best Books of 2015" An NYRB Classics Original The Door is an unsettling exploration of the relationship between two very different women. Magda is a writer, educated, married to an academic, public-spirited, with an on-again-off-again relationship to Hungary’s Communist authorities. Emerence is a peasant, illiterate, impassive, abrupt, seemingly ageless. She lives alone in a house that no one else may enter, not even her closest relatives. She is Magda’s housekeeper and she has taken control over Magda’s household, becoming indispensable to her. And Emerence, in her way, has come to depend on Magda. They share a kind of love—at least until Magda’s long-sought success as a writer leads to a devastating revelation. Len Rix’s prizewinning translation of The Door at last makes it possible for American readers to appreciate the masterwork of a major modern European writer.

Excerpt from The Opening Door a Story of the Woman's Movement There were no examinations at the Misses Wanley's Select School for Girls in New Haven. Such tests of knowledge might be all very well for those larger institutions where strange and wild young women from heaven knows what recesses of this continent are received, hustled through a kind of machine, and packed off home again; but the Misses Wanley's Select School was a day school instituted and maintained for the education of the daughters of New Haven's Good Families - and that is a very different tiling indeed. At the end of a term you listened (if you chose) to a brief resume of the term's work by the lady instructors, shook hands with the surviving Miss Wanley, and went home to await, with what patience God may have endowed you, the passage of a generous vacation. Many otherwise enlightened people often dismiss etiquette as a trivial subject or—worse yet—as nothing but a disguise for moral hypocrisy or unjust social hierarchies. Such sentiments either mistakenly assume that most manners merely frame the “real issues” of any interpersonal exchange or are the ugly vestiges of outdated, unfair social arrangements. But in On Manners, Karen Stohr turns the tables on these easy prejudices, demonstrating that the scope of manners is much broader than most people realize and that manners lead directly to the roots of enduring ethical questions. Stohr suggests that though manners are mostly conventional, they are nevertheless authoritative insofar as they are a primary means by which we express moral attitudes and commitments and carry out important moral goals. Drawing primarily on Aristotle and Kant and with references to a wide range of cultural examples—from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice to Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm—the author ultimately concludes that good manners are essential to moral character.

I am not a celebrity or any other house hold name you could have heard about on the radio or TV. This is my first book. I have no other writing experience. One day as I was sitting in one of my sister's TV room wasting more of my time it dawn on me to write a book about my short hard life I had lived. For some reason I had the faith that this book would be in stores next to celebrities books. I guess it was because I really had a lot of faith that my book on my real life problems maybe would help someone to get some real help with similar issues before it would be too late. I am just a small town girl that has encountered a lifetime of problems by the age of 43, by my own doing mostly and some the devil helped me with, since I have been on God's Mysterious, challenging, unexpected and surprising earth. I will talk about the pain I endured when I was molested at the age of eleven by a close family friend. I lived through depression, anxiety and panic attacks that almost caused me to end my life on many occasions. I've battled mental and physical abuse by the hands of my ex-husband. I have been dealing with the unexpected death of my last man that had almost caused me to lose my mine. I battled the demon of drugs that could have ended my life with one puffing on crack cocaine along with a lot of health problems that could have caused me to have a stroke or heart attack. I hope and pray that my book will help someone; somehow to deal with their problems better than I did. I thank you for purchasing my first book with all my heart. There will be more books to come. ENJOY! GOD BLESS!
