Excerpt from The Witness of the Heart to Christ These Lectures are only indirectly apologetic they necessarily take much for granted: they have one simple aim: they are intended to illustrate the adaptation of the Gospel to the needs of man. Man is the problem: Chris tianity is the solution. Tested in every age and by every race, the Gospel has proved itself fitted to man, and possessed of power to win the wandering affections, to satisfy the uneasy conscience, to establish the wavering will, to form the character, to kindle new hope, and to inspire with nobler aims the chance-led or passion-driven life. Of all those who have appealed to man, Christ alone has uttered the magic words before which the sin-closed door of the human heart has rolled open. If this be true, the truth supplies an argument. Excerpt from The Witness of Jesus and Other Sermons The noblest and most enduring record which any man can leave behind him, when he has finished his earthly labors, is the influence which his life has made on other lives, which, transmitted from one generation to another, becomes a perpetual force for good while the world stands. While such a record is not traceable for human eyes in all its wide and subtle ramifications, it is none the less real and potent. A consecrated personality is the mightiest force for the uplifting of humanity which this world has ever known or can know. A good man is God's best gift to the world. Such a man cannot live and labor and suffer and die without putting into active operation good influences which, embodied in other lives, become permanent factors working for the world's redemption. It has often, however, been a matter of regret among his brethren and friends that Alexander Procter did not, during his active life, put into more enduring form those ideas and truths which, as preached by him, so profoundly affected those who heard them. She's seen slave dungeons in Ghana. Genocide in Rwanda. Systemic sexual abuse in Brazil. Child abuse and domestic violence in the US. After forty years of counseling abuse survivors around the world, Dr. Diane Langberg, a world renowned trauma expert, remains certain that what trauma destroys, Christ can and does restore. This book will convince you, too, of the healing heart of God. But it's not a fast process, instead much patience is required from family, friends, and counselors as they wisely and respectfully help victims unpack their traumatic suffering through talking, tears, and time. And it's not a process that can be separated from the work of God in both a counselor and counselee. Dr. Langberg calls all of those who wish to help sufferers to model Jesus's sacrificial love and care in how they listen, love, and guide. The heart of God is revealed to sufferers as they grow to understand the cross of Christ and how their God came to this earth and experienced such severe suffering that he too is "well-acquainted with grief." The cross of Christ is the lens that transforms and redeems traumatic suffering and its aftermath, not only for the sufferer, but it also transforms those who walk with the suffering. This book will be a great help to anyone who loves, listens to, and seeks to help someone impacted by trauma and abuse. There is no quick fix, but there is the hope for healing through the love of God in Christ.

Excerpt from Manifold Witness for Christ, Vol. 1 It is certain, as a matter of fact, that the Christianity of the mass of men is received by inheritance and teaching, and tested first by practical experience, and then by simple study of the Gospel in itself. I contend not only that this is perfectly reasonable, but that by no other method could Christianity, in accordance with the laws of human nature and experience, hope to assert for itself anything like a universal sway. But when this natural process is chal lenged to justify itself by reason, it appears to me that Christian thought generally passes through the two phases which I have attempted to Sketch in the first and second parts of this volume. I. Christianity obviously presents herself as the chief re presentative of Supernatural Religion', probably the only representative who has any chance of a hearing. The first question which suggests itself to most men on hearing her claim, is the question of the relation in which the Gospel stands to the conclusions and doubts of Natural Religion.' Can it do anything to strengthen the one, and to dispel the other In answer to that question I have endeavoured to Show that here, as in all other cases, the Supernatural is not Preternatural.' Tracing the gradual development in the Bible of the full Christian doctrine, under the pervading idea of Covenant with God, ' I have contended that, in relation to the three fundamental points of religion, the personality of God, the Spirituality of man, and the solution of the mystery of evil, Christianity accords at all points with the main principles of Natural Religion; but at the same time confirms in the calmness of absolute certitude the modest inductions of Natural Theology, and supplements them, when they are silent or speak with stammering tongue. Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Today's alphabet soup of doctrinal views on salvation mirrors the chaotic spiritual experience prevalent throughout much of Christianity: the largest Christian church in the world continues to be plagued by sex-abuse scandals; regular church attendance across many denominations keeps dropping; the divorce rate within Christianity is essentially the same as that outside of it; and shockingly large numbers of Christians, including many pastors, remain addicted to pornography, alcohol, nicotine, and other destructive habits. As a result, Christianity is steadily losing its influence on society-and its hold on the human heart. Yet Jesus promised, "this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations" (Matthew 24:14). But which gospel? Certainly not the one strangling much of Christianity today. Certainly not the one that has left millions of its adherents helpless victims to the power of sin. Certainly not the one that gives the unbelieving world reason to mock the confusion and in-fighting seen in many churches today. No, "this gospel" can only refer to the same gospel that the apostle Paul wrote about in Romans 1:16 when he said, "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth." For over 120 years, this book has guided thousands of people into a life-changing relationship with God. In these pages you will find explained simply and clearly how the plan of salvation works, and how the Bible's promises can become reality in your life. Discover and experience God's pathway to peace and spiritual victory!

In this wide-ranging book, Rowan Williams argues that what we say about Jesus Christ is key to understanding what Christian belief says about creator and creation overall. Through detailed discussion of texts from the earliest centuries to the present day, we are shown some of the various and subtle ways in which Christians have discovered in their reflections on Christ the possibility of a deeply affirmative approach to creation, and a set of radical insights in ethics and politics as well. Throughout his life, Rowan Williams has been deeply influenced by thinkers of the Eastern Christian tradition as well as Catholic and Anglican writers. This book draws on insights from Eastern Christianity, from the Western Middle Ages and from Reformed thinkers, from Calvin to Bonhoeffer – as well as considering theological insights sparked by philosophers like Kierkegaard and Wittgenstein. Christ the Heart of Creation concerns fundamental issues for Christian belief and Williams tackles them head-on: he writes with pellucid clarity and shows his gift for putting across what are inevitably complex ideas to a wide audience.

Excerpt from The Christ of the Human Heart: A Christmas Gift-Book The poet gliding out into the mystical moist night air to escape an icy intellectualism that he might gaze in perfect silence at the stars illustrates the longing we all experience at times to escape the critical temper of our age. We would fain leave the lecture-room for some beautiful temple of faith and there 'worship in untroubled confi dence the God of our Fathers. As the astronomer may deal with solar distances, with the motion andsize of suns and stars until he forgets the beauty of the silent heavens, and misses the grandeur that awes the soul of child and poet, so we modems, who are nothing if not critical, in our critical blindness are in grave danger of losing the beauty that streams across the centuries from the life and work of the Man of Nazareth, as conceived in the loving imaginations of men. Excerpt from The Messenger of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Vol. 27: April, 1892 They did not even recall that: Thou wilt not give Thy Holy One to see corruption. They meant to come again with Spices to embalm Christ's Body against decay, and hence they made sure to see the sepulchre and how His Body was laid. That very night they prepared the Spices; the second day they rested, for it was the Sabbath; and all this time the Body of Jesus was lying behind the great stone which had been rolled to the door of the monument.
