Excerpt from Foreign Missions Thoughtful men have long ago noted a westward trend in the great movements of the world this is true not only as regards empire in a material but in a spiritual sense. It is possible, indeed, that some part of the following reflections on this subject may be considered fanciful, and with truth; yet the combined effect of them may profitably arrest the attention. Excerpt from Foreign Missions After a Century These lectures were delivered in the spring of 1893, before the faculty and students of Princeton Theological Seminary, on the basis of the newly established Students' Lectureship on Missions, being the first course delivered on that foundation. The second lecture has been extended to double its original length, in order to give a fuller survey of the world's Macedonian appeal than was possible within the usual limits of a single lecture. Otherwise the course is printed substantially as prepared for delivery, except that some passages here and there which were omitted for the sake of brevity have been retained, and some later facts of interest have been inserted. Excerpt from Foreign Missions: Our Privilege and Responsibility Not only is our view point changing, but our vision of the character and extent of the missionary work of the church is steadily enlarging. Is it not true that until recently the Roman Catholic Church alone possessed the imperial vision of the universal domin ion of our Lord and sought to make that vision a reality? It surveyed the world and sought to extend its form of Christianity from the rivers to the ends of the earth. Excerpt from Wonders of Missions The purpose of this book is not to narrate the story of Foreign Missions, but to illustrate it. No attempt has been made to present a comprehensive thesaurus of' striking episodes in the course of missionary history. I suppose, were this to be done, not even the world itself could contain the books that should be written. The incidents and characters described, gleaned from many sources, may not transcend in interest or importance multitudes not here included. These have been chosen as typical and significant. They are set forth in the belief that, however familiar, they will serve afresh as a tonic to our faith and to our devotion. Excerpt from Foreign Missions: Their Relations and Claims The work now offered to the Christian public had its origin in a series of Lectures on Foreign Missions, delivered in the Theological Seminary at Andover, under appointment from the Trus tees; and subsequently, by request, before the Theological Seminaries at Bangor, Hartford, Auburn, and Princeton, and the Union Semi nary in New York City. It was fitting that the oldest of our theological seminaries, and the first to send missionaries into foreign heathen lands, should take the lead in establishing, for its students, a permanent Lectureship on For eign Missions. This was created by a vote of the Trustees early in the year 1866; and the needful pecuniary endowment was secured to the Seminary by henry H. Hyde, Esq, a citizen of Boston. The statutes of the endowment re quire the course to embrace as many as ten lectures; but it is left for the Trustees to de cide, whether they shall be delivered annually. Excerpt from A World Book of Foreign Missions: What They Are, What They Prove, How to Help IN recent years the literature of missions has greatly increased in quantity. Most of it is of the deepest interest. Much of it is best suited for the student, the scholar, and for people of leisure. It is the opinion of the present writer that there is need for a book bringing together, in a concise form, the history and results of modern missions, and at the same time showing their connection with the past. In the preparation of the following book the aim has been to supply information to busy Christian people of all denominations, in such a form that it can be read without an undue encroachment upon their already much occupied time.
