Excerpt from The Teaching of Tennyson Has Tennyson any message, or is he merely "an idle singer of an empty day"? Is he content to leave us in admiration of his beautiful art without a guiding gleam for the conduct of life? Does he give us any great verities upon which we may stand, as upon rock, in the midst of the surging voices of doubt? Does he sing of the ultimate man - the final triumph of the race; or docs he wail a requiem over lost ideals, and a creed out-worn? By careful classification of the related poems I have striven, in the following pages, to extract the teaching of the poet. We shall find that he not only gives an ethical law for the guidance of life, but an answer to those deeper questions that utter their tremulous voices in the shrine of the soul. Excerpt from Tennyson as a Religious Teacher A word of explanation is, perhaps, not unnecessary as to the method pursued in the following pages. Many of these may appear only remotely to deal with Tennyson's position, and mainly to be occupied with the comments and suggestions of the author. The chapters on Vastness, Evolution, Immortality, and others, may seem but in adequate attempts to discuss contemporary problems, with only scattered allusions to the work of Tennyson. Excerpt from Tennyson There may seem to be some alxilogy'necesm'for adding to the vast volume of Dante literature. It is true that there is no lack of Essays on isolated points, general lntrfxluctions and detailed Commentaries but of simple and popular Exposition, of the Guam-did, canto by canto, there exists very little in our language. 'to present such an eslmsition, bringing out the general bearing and scope of Dante's ethical teaching, is the chief purpose of this volume. Lere niceties and in genuities of interpretation have been avoided as far as possible. It is the author's belief that Dante's symbolism is not really so obscure and intricate as it appears to a beginner, and that once the clue is gained, it leads to the broad highway of universal morality. His aim is to remove the impression of arbitrariness which Dante's punishments -leave. On many minds. By showing that in the main they are, in material, visible and symbolic forms, the natural and inevitable moral and spiritual issues of the various sins. In this exposition constant reference is made to the writings of Dante's great ethical authorities. Aristotle. And Thomas Aquinas; but above all Dante is regarded. Excerpt from Tennyson Poet, Philosopher, Idealist: Studies of the Life, Work, and Teaching of the Poet Laureate Lest misunderstanding should arise, it is perhaps as well that I should explain at the outset that I have not at tempted to supply a biography of the late Lord Tennyson. I have given prominence to his literary career, and prefer ence to those facts which illustrated the literary side of his character. Believing, as I do, in the far-reaching and permanent efi'ects of early environment, I have recounted with some detail the events of Tennyson's youth; but in succeeding chapters I have only casually caught up the main threads of his personal history. Each chapter is a separate and complete study of some phase of Tennyson's work, and I have particularly endea voured to deal adequately with his religion, philosophy, and politics. Some doubtful points I hope to have set at rest by undertaking original investigations and by careful reference to standard authorities. The criticisms of Tenny son's contemporaries, especially those of his youth, are quoted at some length because of their interest and value. Excerpt from Selections From Tennyson: Edited With Notes The selection of the poems in this book is the only part of it for which the editor is not responsible. Some of the poems seem to us admirably suited to their purpose of conveying to a beginner an adequate general idea of the work of Tennyson, but it does not seem certain that the real purpose of such selections. Has been constantly kept in view in the choosing. There are usually two faults found with a hand-book of this kind; one is that the notes are too scanty, the other that they are too full. Those who reflect on the wide constituency for which these books are prepared will, of course, be very slow to pass any general verdict on this question. The present writer has kept in view the various schools from north to south, and east to west, of which he has had knowledge, as well as that large number of candidates who annually appear not attached to any school but self-prepared, and has endeavoured to divide their labour with all who need assistance. The sole object of this book isito furnish young students in Ontario and Manitoba such an introduction to Tennyson will - make them earnest readers of that poet for life. In no instance has the desire to prepare students for certain examinations been permitted to degrade the tone of the work the triumph of the teacher of literature is to make many earnest readers of good books, not to pass many candidates yet it so happens that as a rule if he strives for the first reward the second is added. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from Tennyson's Geraint and Enid and Other Poems The present volume contains those poems of Tennyson that have been prescribed by the University of Toronto for the pass Matriculation Examination, and adopted by the Education Department of the Province for the Junior Leaving Examination. The text of the poems is that of the last English edition, many earlier readings being given in the notes whenever a comparison with the altered text would serve to test or to improve the student's literary judgment and taste The introduction is three-fold: (1) a chronology of the poet's career; (2) a short series of biographical articles; (3) a description of Tennyson's homes and haunts, based on observations made by the present editor during a recent tour in Lincolnshire, Tennyson's native county. In the preparation of the notes and in making extracts from the comments and criticisms of others, the editor has kept constantly in view two thing': (1) the limitations of ordinary High School pupils as to the time at their disposal for original literary research; (2) the necessity of supplying the student with those historical and biographical facts that serve to elucidate the text. Critical comments and notes of interpretation have been given only on passages where it was felt that, the young student might need such aid For obvious reasons specal attention has been given in this edition to the "Locksley Hall" poems. The excellent article in the Appendix on "The Two Locksley Halls" will be found of much value. It is scarcely necessary to mention the various works on Tennyson that have been consulted in the preparation of this little volume. Acknowledgements, however, are due to Miss E. M. Baliner, B.A., for very valuable aid in annotation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
