The Story Of Kennett by Bayard Taylor At noon, on the first Saturday of March, 1796, there was an unusual stir at the old Barton farm-house, just across the creek to the eastward, as you leave Kennett Square by the Philadelphia stage-road. Any gathering of the people at Barton's was a most rare occurrence; yet, on that day and at that hour, whoever stood upon the porch of the corner house, in the village, could see horsemen approaching by all the four roads which there met." The Story of Kennett is a novel by American author Bayard Taylor. Taylor was a writer of both fiction and non-fiction, with a particular focus on travel writing. For this novel Taylor has taken his skills in travel writing and applied them to his own hometown of Chester County, Pennsylvania, which serves as the backdrop for this story. The Story of Kennett is exactly that - a novel about life in rural Pennsylvania in the 1900's. Taylor tells a fictionalized story that clearly draws its inspiration from real people and places. This is a book about country life and country drama and the characters that populate this world. The author gives us a front row seat at a Quaker meeting, details a barn raising, and invites us to both a country wedding and a funeral. A talented author, Taylor's writing places a great deal of emphasis on the environment, from the buildings to the animals to the countryside itself. In this way the essence the story also provides a scenic ride around the area in which the author grew up. Bayard Taylor (James) (1825-1878) was an American poet and writer. A little volume, published at Philadelphia in 1844 under the title Ximena; or, The Battle of the Sierra Morena and Other Poems, brought its author a little cash; and indirectly it did him better service as the means of his introduction to The New York Tribune. With the money and an advance made to him on account of some journalistic work to be done in Europe, he set sail for the East. The graphic accounts which he sent from Europe to The New York Tribune, The Saturday Evening Post, and The United States Gazette were so highly appreciated that on Taylor's return to America he was advised to throw his articles into book form. In 1846 appeared his Views A-Foot; or, Europe Seen with Knapsack and Staff. In 1851, he travelled to Egypt and towards the end of 1852; he sailed for Calcutta, proceeding thence to China, where he joined the expedition of Commodore Perry to Japan. His works include: The Story of Kennett (1866) and Beauty and the Beast (1872).
