But why add another to the store of this already book-full world? Why go digging into the records of the past, to learn of our remote ancestors and their manner of life? Is there not enough in the present time to interest and instruct us? Some may be disposed to ask such questions, and they are worthy of an answer. Ours was a worthy ancestor. He was not what the world calls a great man, but he was a good man, a conscientious man, an honest man, energetic in every movement which makes a man a good citizen. We do well to rescue his life from oblivion. He was the ancestor of a numerous family of descendants, whose record is remarkably free from those things that bring discredit, a family who have been forward in business enterprise, patriotic endeavor, promoters of churches, schools, and social progress, people who stand for advanced thought and good citizenship, - the bone and sinew of the land. Surely, to place such a record in the hands of our children and our children's children will be an inspiration to live worthily, which is well worth the money and pains that it may have required.
