Excerpt from The Pool of Stars I wish it were not going to be so lonely for you, Betsey, he had said as he made preparations to go, but at least you will be busy. I am glad that we have found such a good school for you at last. A few more changes, and your education would have been wrecked entirely. Betsey had always meant to go to college and was now in the last half-year of her preparation. Trans fers from one school to another had indeed resulted in so much lost time that she was already a little be hind her proper class and would, so she agreed with her father, lose all chances of fulfilling her plans should she change again. She sighed deeply as she thought of it, sitting there upon the stone, for it was this very question that was casting shadows over a very brilliant prospect. Excerpt from Lucy of the Stars My hosts are very lovable, he wrote, in late August, and nothing is quite so clear as that they are in nowise responsible for my being depressed and bored. I consult my diary and find that to-day is the twenty-eighth, and we left on the fourteenth. Undeniably, then, I have been only two weeks away. Possibly I am still in the coma of some new midsummer disease that will not let me con centrate my mind long enough to read even a novel through. I have tried three and finished none. Two weeks! It seems two months! There followed a page and more about people and places. This part Lucy skimmed, and, return ing to the study Of the sentences quoted, she found them one moment intelligible, the next confusing. The second telegram, which came only a few hours after the letter, dispelled previous doubts; filled in previous lapses with sudden comprehension. Excerpt from The Science of the Stars But When he tried to deal with the movements of the planets, he found that there were not enough good observations available for him to build up any satis factory theory. He therefore devoted himself to the work of making systematic determinations of the places of the planets that he might put his successors in a better position to deal with the problem than he was. Excerpt from The Ladder to the Stars Miriam sat down by the round table which stood in the middle of the room, and with a final tug got off the damp thread gloves and laid them on the table. A weariness of mind, not of body, overcame her for a moment at this reception. Oh, I do not know; I like the exercise and the freshness of the fields and the quiet, she explained. Aunt Pillar surveyed her niece disapprovingly, pursing her lips together. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Study of the Stars The first accurate measures of the positions of the stars were made in the middle of the eighteenth century. The catalogue of Bradley in 1755 is even at the present time one of the best means of determining the early positions of the stars. A large number of Similar, but later, Observations by Hornsby are still unpublished. During the next hun dred years the meridian circle, which is at present the standard instru ment for determining the places of thegstars, was gradually evolved. In this instrument, a telescope is mounted so that it will point only to stars in the meridian, that is, to stars exactly north or south of the observer. The declinations of stars, corresponding to the latitude of points on the surface of the earth, are then measured by a finely gradu ated circle. Owing to the motion of the earth all stars cross the meridian twice during every twenty-four hours. The right ascension, corresponding to longitude, will be given by the time of transit. At first, this time was found by the eye and ear method in which the Observer counted the ticks of an accurate timepiece and compared them mentally with the instant at which the star appeared to cross a wire in the field of view of the telescope. About the middle of the nineteenth century a great advance was made by recording the time electrically on a chronograph. This method was known for many years as the Ameri can method, owing to its-introduction and general adoption in this country. This continued to be the standard method almost to the present time, and an enormous number of observations have been accumulated in this way, the total cost amounting to millions of dol lars. Perhaps the most valuable 'work of this kind is that of the Astronomische Gesellschaft, which, by international cooperation, secured accurate Observations of the positions of one hundred and sixty-six thousand stars. All stars of the ninth magnitude, and brighter, north of declination - 23° are included. Of the twenty zones, seven were Observed in Germany, four in the United States, three in Russia, one each in Algeria, Austria, England, Holland, Norway and Sweden. Of the American zones, one was observed at Albany, one at Washington. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Costly Star A gate in the enclosure opposite opened and Santa Claus entered. There were shouts of laughter as the children rushed to him. Some more timid than the rest hid their little hands behind them and could not be persuaded to shake the big hand of their half-feared friend. She knew her boy would not be there in a public play-room, but she liked to find the boys who resembled him there were often some who did, but the comparisons were to his advantage.
