Excerpt from The "Stage" In Aristophanes If this explanation of the five passages is correct, these are the re sults. It is shown that the old interpretation of the terms ascend and 'descend') is impossible for the Vitruvian stage in the third and fifth passages; moreover, in the fifth, that the sense 'retire' is also impossible in the scholiast's application of the meaning, since actors and chorus are on a level. The last passage, therefore, is positive proof against the existence of a stage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
