The Russians claimed northern North America by right of discovery in 1741. During their occupation of “Russian America” the region was little more than an outpost for fur hunters and traders. When the czar sold the territory to the United States in 1867, nobody knew what to do with “Seward’s Folly.” Mainland America paid little attention to the new acquisition until a rush of gold seekers flooded into the Yukon Territory. In 1906 Congress granted Alaska Territory a voteless delegate and in 1912 gave it a territorial legislature. Not until 1959, however, was Alaska’s long-sought goal of statehood realized. During World War II, Alaska’s place along the great circle route from the United States to Asia firmly established its military importance, which was underscored during the Cold War. The developing military garrison brought federal money and many new residents. Then the discovery of huge oil and natural-gas deposits gave a measure of economic security to the state. A special Bay light falls on beautiful Benicia, on the north shore of the Carquinez Strait. Two U.S. citizens, Robert Semple and Thomas Larkin, bought the land from Mexican Army General Mariano Vallejo for $100 and the promise to name it for Vallejo's wife in 1847. The next year a customer at Von Pfister's Benicia waterfront store let slip the secret of the gold discovery at Sutter's Mill. Benicia's deep water harbor attracted Pacific Mail and Steamship Company, the first major California industry, the famous Matthew Turner shipyards, tanneries, and the Central Pacific Railroad, which made Benicia its transcontinental terminus. State legislators made the town their third state capital in 1853. This historic story of romance and tragedy revolves around one woman, the struggles in her life, and how she overcame these hardships. The arc of the story and characters are based on actual events and people. This story begins in early Spanish California where a young woman who was born and raised in San Francisco feels trapped and isolated from the world. She is the daughter of the Presidio Commandant and is regarded as the most beautiful doncella in all of Alta California. In 1806 a ship sails into the great bay with a Russian nobleman on a very desperate mission. Concepcion (Concha) Arguello and Nikolai Rezanov allegedly fall in love and plan to marry. Aside from their age difference, there are significant and complex barriers of politics, religion, world turmoil, and family they must contend with. There was a great deal of skepticism about this affair throughout much of 19th century California; after all, Concha wanted to escape California, yet Nikolai wanted to plant the Tsar's flag here. Concha wished to see the world's great cities and institutions while Nikolai saw California as a Garden of Eden that could supplement Russia's colony in Alaska. The arc of this story also follows a present-day professor who is seeking answers to this unresolved scandal. In old California Mission days, there was little news of the outside world, and boredom was an aching reminder of isolation. The one joyous pastime was their fandangos with lively dancing to break the monotony. Two hundred years later the professor finds archival materials containing musical notations written by a mysterious character, as well as old documents and notes that shed new light on this debated romance of long ago and answers the question; did they truly love one another? This is not a romantic novel per se, but a story of a devoted but unfulfilled love and a life set in difficult times. The hardships and uncertainty faced by Concepcion and Nikolai will resonate with the reader.

As a unique, distant geographical region of the United States, Alaska has evolved from military insignificance to high strategic priority in the 142 years since its purchase from Russia in 1867. The reasons for this dramatic shift derive from a correlation of geography, foreign policy, domestic politics, and military technology. Historically the role of the armed forces in Alaska has been large and diverse. Alaska was one of the two principal territorial purchases made by the United States between 1803 and 1867 adding nearly 1.5 million square miles to America’s national domain. Smaller by the size of Texas than Jefferson’s Louisiana Purchase, Alaska, unlike all of the territories and states carved out of the former, languished in obscurity and isolation, and was administered as a colonial dependency by the military and other branches of the federal government, its official ‘territorial status’ and government notwithstanding. While sharing many common aspects of frontier settlement and Western history with territories such as Montana, the Dakotas, Wyoming, and Colorado, Alaska presented special challenges peculiar to a non-contiguous arctic and sub-Arctic environment, separated from the United States by a foreign power. The love story: Concepcion Arguello, daughter of the Commandante of the Presidio of San Francisco (yerba Buena) met Russian nobleman, Nikolai Rezanov, in 1806. They fell in love and intended to marry. Because they were of different faiths, permission to marry had to be granted by Rome and by the Russian Orthodox Church. Nikolai returned to St. Petersburg to seek permission. On the jounrey, he fell from his horse and died in Siberia in 1807. Concepcion rejected many other suitors and dedicated her life to charitable work. She entered the cominican order at Santa Catalina Convent in Monterey, California. The convent moved to Benicia in 1854. Concepcion died in the convent in 1857 and is buried in St. Dominic's Cemetery in Benicia.

As seminarian students, Terry and Francis took three years of theology at St. Patrick Seminary & University in Menlo Park under the Diaconate Formation Program with the hopes of Francisco becoming a deacon with the Class of 2006.
