Written by a senior Indian diplomat who has until recently also served as Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General, this book provides a unique and far-reaching exploration of the British Commonwealth, and its impact since the second World War on the process of Britain adjusting to a world without Empire. Whither the Commonwealth now? What is its record of achievement; what are the benefits of membership to countries in terms of collective political influence, trade, investment, aid, travel and education? Can any practical good be envisaged for this nearly moribund post-colonial organization? Britain, which brought the association into being and is central to it, would have to play a key part in determining its future. But in coming to such decisions, the British Government faces great problems of perception, both from the Monarchy and the British public.

The controversial Netflix series The Crown covers the tumultuous period from the Queen’s accession in 1952 to the present day, and so does this book, which explores the rise, decline and—to some—unexpected rebound of the historic UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand alliance. While a post-Brexit and post-Elizabethan Britain seeks a new role in today’s volatile world, its traditional partner countries also recognise the logic of reinvigorating their relationship, based on a multitude of still-strong cultural, economic, political, and military ties, including the monarchy as a uniquely shared global, and not merely British, institution. But this wasn’t always the case. Although in the 1950s commentators spoke of a new "Elizabethan Age" with much postwar hope across the Commonwealth, that optimism quickly faded. By the 1970s, many thought Britain washed up and that Crown and Commonwealth ties and allegiance were becoming obsolete. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the four countries increasingly went their separate ways. So, a groggy time-traveller from that period appearing in London, Toronto, Sydney, or Auckland today would be taken by surprise by the durability of the Crown, even as it has passed to King Charles, and the growing reconvergence of the four "CANZUK" realms in terms of trade, defence, foreign policy coordination, freedom of movement, mutual recognition of professional qualifications, and other new or revived links. This book evocatively tells the whole story of where we are, what’s possible for the future, and not least how we got here. In today’s age of global instability and raw power politics, this renewed Anglosphere Crown Commonwealth alliance is more important and relevant than ever.

Excerpt from The British Commonwealth of Nations: A Study of Its Past and Future Development The problems of government presented by the British Empire fall roughly into three great categories: (I) problems of national government, (2) problems of imperial government, (3) problems of international government. Into the first category fall questions centring in and chiefly concerning some one member of the group of five self-governing States, namely, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Into the second category fall questions arising out of the relationships between these self-governing States and their dependencies (e.g., as between the United Kingdom and India, or the Crown Colonies, Protectorates, Mandated Territories, etc.; or as between Australia and Papua, or New Zealand and Samoa, or South Africa and late German South-West Africa). Into the third category fall questions arising out of the mutual relationships of the group of five States already mentioned. It is with this third category, the problem of international government presented by the relationships between the Dominions and the United Kingdom, that this book is mainly concerned. Its aim is to trace the rise of this problem, to give a critical account of the momentous developments of the last few years, to investigate the various aspects of the problem as it faces us to-day, and to suggest the general lines along which the British Commonwealth should develop in the future, not merely in respect of its internal relations, but also in respect of its relations with the all-inclusive League of Nations. The British Commonwealth has now readied the third of the three great turning-points in its development. The first was the American Revolution, and the second the grant of a limited Responsible Government to Canada. It is usual to see the United Kingdom as an island of continuity in an otherwise convulsed and unstable Europe; its political history a smooth sequence of administrations, a story of building a welfare state and coping with decline. But what if Britain's history was approached from a different angle? What if we wrote about it with as we might write the history of Germany, say, or the Soviet Union, as a story of power, and of transformation? David Edgerton's major new book breaks out of the confines of traditional British national history to reveal an unfamiliar place, subject to radical discontinuities. Out of a liberal, capitalist, genuinely global power of a unique kind, there arose from the 1940s a distinct British nation. This was committed to internal change, making it much more like the great continental powers. From the 1970s it became bound up both with the European Union and with foreign capital in new ways. Such a perspective produces new and refreshed understanding of everything from the nature of British politics to the performance of British industry. Packed with surprising examples and arguments, The Rise and Fall of the British Nationgives us a grown-up, unsentimental history, one which is crucial at a moment of serious reconsideration for the country and its future.
