The charges of white privilege and systemic racism that are tearing the country apart fIoat free of reality. Two known facts, long since documented beyond reasonable doubt, need to be brought into the open and incorporated into the way we think about public policy: American whites, blacks, Hispanics, and Asians have different violent crime rates and different means and distributions of cognitive ability. The allegations of racism in policing, college admissions, segregation in housing, and hiring and promotions in the workplace ignore the ways in which the problems that prompt the allegations of systemic racism are driven by these two realities. What good can come of bringing them into the open? America’s most precious ideal is what used to be known as the American Creed: People are not to be judged by where they came from, what social class they come from, or by race, color, or creed. They must be judged as individuals. The prevailing Progressive ideology repudiates that ideal, demanding instead that the state should judge people by their race, social origins, religion, sex, and sexual orientation. We on the center left and center right who are the American Creed’s natural defenders have painted ourselves into a corner. We have been unwilling to say openly that different groups have significant group differences. Since we have not been willing to say that, we have been left defenseless against the claims that racism is to blame. What else could it be? We have been afraid to answer. We must. Facing Reality is a step in that direction.

Hunted by loan sharks, Joseph Shields is a nineteen-year-old in deep debt and even deeper trouble. Thanks to an unfortunate toaster fire, he’s also dead. Well ... sort of. Miraculously, Joseph wakes up in Hyleberia, an amazing island republic that rules the Earth and everything on it. Having been selected at random to become a citizen, he is given little choice but to start a second life here far from all he once knew. Before long, Joseph finds himself making eccentric friends, learning the secrets of reality and seeing wonders beyond his imagination. Yet Hyleberia is no heaven. Besides a corrupt government and a troubled history, lurking in the shadows is an evil leader widely believed to be defeated, the fearsome Prince of Darkness. Sooner or later, Joseph must rise to protect the island—not to mention humanity—from a sinister plot that threatens the world itself.

Excerpt from The Republic of the Future: Or Socialism a Reality You may remember, perhaps, that before starting I found myself in very grave doubt as to which route to take - whether to come by balloon or by tunnel. As the latter route would enable me to enjoy an entirely novel spectacle, that of viewing sub-marine scenery, I chose, and wisely I now know, to come by the Pneu matic Tube Electric Company. The comforts and luxuries of this sub-marine route are beyond belief. The perfection of the contrivances for supplying hot and cold. Air, for instance, during the journey, are such that the passengers are enabled to have almost any temperature at com mand. The cars are indeed marked 70 Fahr., 80 and One buys one's seat according. Reality and Rhetoric is the culmination of P. T. Bauer's observations and reflections on Third World economies over a period of thirty years. He critically examines the central issues of market versus centrally planned economies, industrial development, official direct and multinational resource transfers to the Third World, immigration policy in the Third World, and economic methodology. In addition, he has written a fascinating account of recent papal doctrine on income inequality and redistribution in the Third World. The major themes that emerge are the importance of non-economic variables, particularly people's aptitudes and mores, to economic growth; the unfortunate results of some current methods of economics; the subtle but important effects of the exchange economy on development; and the politicization of economic life in the Third World. As in Bauer's previous writings, this book is marked by elegant prose, apt examples, a broad economic-historical perspective, and the masterful use of informal reasoning.

The difference between cause and effect seems obvious and crucial in ordinary life, yet missing modern physics. Almost a century ago, Bertrand Russell called the law of causality 'a relic of a bygone age'. Scholars revisit Russell's conclusion, discussing one of the most significant and puzzling issues in contemporary thought.
