"Arthur Kent is one of the best of our breed." Walter Cronkite has said -- & this book proves it. From deadly battlefields to boardroom clashes, RISK & REDEMPTION describes in gripping detail the challenges award-winning journalist Kent & other foreign correspondents face each day. Kent first takes you behind the scenes reporting events such as the war in Afghanistan, Tiananmen Square & the Persian Gulf War, where he was nicknamed the "SCUD-Stud" for his live television reporting from Saudi Arabia. Then in one of the most controversial exposes in the history of the medium, Kent reveals the shocking mismanagement that led him to sue NBC management for $25 million. After eighteen months of litigation, Kent won an unprecedented settlement package from NBC, prompting one media specialist to comment: "I cannot remember a case with such a public display of retraction." RISK & REDEMPTION is well-written, fast-paced & heartening. Ingram Book Company, 800-937-8000, Baker & Taylor, 400-775-1100 or Bookazine, 800-221-8112. Excerpt from The Redemption of Arthur True: A Rural School Story The stories and semi-stories, good and indifferently good, which treat of some phase of the rural school problem, are numerous - rather too numerous, perhaps. But the last line has not been written upon the important subject of country school conditions; and, so long as vigorous English, either spoken or written, can be of any use in behalf of improved educational facilities for country boys and girls, may the last line never come until the blessed millennium has arrived! The little volume which Mr. Bratten issues under the title, "The Redemption of Arthur True," is a distinct and important contribution to pedagogical fiction. Under the guise of entertaining narrative, as has been the wont of so many who have had great messages to convey, Mr. Bratten makes an eloquent appeal for better rural schools. The simple, accurate, and particularly vivid picture of school conditions in Illinois as the author has observed them is not so much a matter of fiction as it is actual history, and very modern history, too. The imagination has not been severely taxed to furnish all the materials of a story well calculated to hold the interest. No one who is at all familiar with rural school needs as they exist in most localities of Southern Illinois can doubt, even momentarily, that Mr. Bratten's story is true to life in every detail. “I dare you to read this novel and not fall in love with Arthur Truluv. His story will make you laugh and cry, and will show you a love that never ends, and what it means to be truly human.”—Fannie Flagg An emotionally powerful novel about three people who each lose the one they love most, only to find second chances where they least expect them “Fans of Meg Wolitzer, Emma Straub, or [Elizabeth] Berg’s previous novels will appreciate the richly complex characters and clear prose. Redemptive without being maudlin, this story of two misfits lucky to have found one another will tug at readers’ heartstrings.”—Booklist For the past six months, Arthur Moses’s days have looked the same: He tends to his rose garden and to Gordon, his cat, then rides the bus to the cemetery to visit his beloved late wife for lunch. The last thing Arthur would imagine is for one unlikely encounter to utterly transform his life. Eighteen-year-old Maddy Harris is an introspective girl who visits the cemetery to escape the other kids at school. One afternoon she joins Arthur—a gesture that begins a surprising friendship between two lonely souls. Moved by Arthur’s kindness and devotion, Maddy gives him the nickname “Truluv.” As Arthur’s neighbor Lucille moves into their orbit, the unlikely trio band together and, through heartache and hardships, help one another rediscover their own potential to start anew. Wonderfully written and full of profound observations about life, The Story of Arthur Truluv is a beautiful and moving novel of compassion in the face of loss, of the small acts that turn friends into family, and of the possibilities to achieve happiness at any age. Look for a sneak peek of Elizabeth Berg’s delightful new novel, Night of Miracles, in the back of the book. “For several days after [finishing The Story of Arthur Truluv], I felt lifted by it, and I found myself telling friends, also feeling overwhelmed by 2017, about the book. Read this, I said, it will offer some balance to all that has happened, and it is a welcome reminder we’re all neighbors here.”—Chicago Tribune “Not since Paul Zindel’s classic The Pigman have we seen such a unique bond between people who might not look twice at each other in real life. This small, mighty novel offers proof that they should.”—People, Book of the Week

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • BOOKER PRIZE FINALIST • From the bestselling author of The Sense of an Ending comes an “extraordinary … first rate” novel (The New York Times Book Review) that follows the lives of two very different British men and explores the grand tapestry of late-Victorian Britain. As boys, George, the son of a Midlands vicar, and Arthur, living in shabby genteel Edinburgh, find themselves in a vast and complex world at the heart of the British Empire. Years later—one struggling with his identity in a world hostile to his ancestry, the other creating the world’s most famous detective while in love with a woman who is not his wife—their fates become inextricably connected.

This “luminescent” (Kirkus Reviews) story of anger and art, loss and redemption will appeal to fans of Lisa Graff’s Lost in the Sun and Vince Vawter’s Paperboy. NOMINATED FOR 16 STATE AWARDS! AN ALA NOTABLE BOOK AN ILA TEACHERS CHOICE A KIRKUS REVIEWS BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR Arthur T. Owens grabbed a brick and hurled it at the trash picker. Arthur had his reasons, and the brick hit the Junk Man in the arm, not the head. But none of that matters to the judge—he is ready to send Arthur to juvie forever. Amazingly, it’s the Junk Man himself who offers an alternative: 120 hours of community service . . . working for him. Arthur is given a rickety shopping cart and a list of the Seven Most Important Things: glass bottles, foil, cardboard, pieces of wood, lightbulbs, coffee cans, and mirrors. He can’t believe it—is he really supposed to rummage through people’s trash? But it isn’t long before Arthur realizes there’s more to the Junk Man than meets the eye, and the “trash” he’s collecting is being transformed into something more precious than anyone could imagine. . . . Inspired by the work of folk artist James Hampton, Shelley Pearsall has crafted an affecting and redemptive novel about discovering what shines within us all, even when life seems full of darkness. “A moving exploration of how there is often so much more than meets the eye.” —Booklist, starred review “There are so many things to love about this book. Remarkable.” —The Christian Science Monitor
