Excerpt from The Reading of Shakespeare Almost every English-speaking man with literary tastes has had, at some time in his life, a bout with Shakespeare, since this dramatist represents the highest object of his literary curiosity, and it may also be affirmed that one who possesses any virility of mind is made stronger by the study of Shakespeare; our strenuous chief magistrate, it is said, is fond of Shakespeare, and reads him for refreshment while stretched before the fire in his Montana log cabin. The subject itself of Shakespeare aids us in our reading by its very magnitude. Nature has produced three poets who stand like mountain peaks higher than the rest - Homer, Dante, and Shakespeare. Excerpt from The Works of William Shakespeare For instance, in cases where the text of the earliest editions is manifestly fa but where it is impossible to decide with confidence which, if any, of se suggested emendations is right, we have in the Cambridge Shakespeare lefl original reading in our text, mentioning in our notes all the proposed alterati in this edition, we have substituted in the text the emendation which seemed probable, or in cases of absolute equality, the earliest suggested. But the u number of such variations between the texts of the two editions is very small. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Study of Shakespeare For some fifteen years I have conducted classes in the study of Shakespeare at the University of Indiana. I early found that great advantage was derived from an intimate knowledge of the social conditions that obtained at the time the plays were written. My attempt to furnish some assistance in this direction by the publication of an account of Shakespeare's London and of the people of Eliza beth's generation has given me confidence in the preparation of a handbook designed differently from many now in use. Though criticism of the plays forms the larger part of the following pages, I have had no intention of writing a volume of criticism. The book is not intended to be read on its independent merits, but in conjunction with a study of the texts. Though I hope it will be of interest to those already familiar with the plays of Shakespeare, it is primarily ad dressed to students. Excerpt from A New Variorum Edition of Shakespeare The Shakespeare Club, - 'many millions strong' as Christopher North says, - is made up of readers of Shakespeare and students of Shakespeare. All are readers, and some at times students. When reading Shakespeare, we resign ourselves to the mighty current, and let it bear us along whithersoever it will; we see no shoals, heed no rocks, need no pilot. Whether spoken from rude boards or printed in homely form, the words are Shakespeare's, the hour is his, and a thought of texts is an impertinence. But when we study Shakespeare, then (r.u mood changes; no longer are we 'sitting at a play, ' the passive recipients of impressions through the eye and ear, but we weigh every word, analyse every expression, sift every phrase, that no grain of art or beauty which we can assimilate shall escape. To do this to our best advantage we must have Shakespeare's own words before us. No other words will avail, even though they be those of the wisest and most inspired of our day and generation. We must have Shakespeare's own text; or, failing this, the nearest possible approach to it. We shall be duly grateful to the wise and learned, who, where phrases are obscure, give us the words which they believe to have been Shakespeare's; but, as students, we must have under our eyes the original text, which, however stubborn it may seem at times, may yet open its treasures to our importunity, and reveal charms before undreamed of. This original text is to be found in the First edition of his Works, published in 1623, and usually known as the First Folio, which was presumably printed from the words written by Shakespeare's own hand, or from Stage copies adapted from his manuscripts. In Reading Shakespeare Film First, Mary Ellen Dakin asserts that we need to read Shakespeare in triplicate--as the stuff of transformative literature, theater, and film. The potential for the mutual reinforcement and transfer of twenty-first-century literacy skills between text and film is too promising for classroom teachers to overlook. Studying Shakespeare in the high school classroom can and sometimes should begin with images and film. The heart of this book is a triangle whose three points are literary, theatrical, and cinematic; the chapters map a route around the perimeter of the triangle, guiding teachers and students with carefully researched and classroom-tested strategies for crossing over from Shakespeare's rich and strange early modern English to equally rich and strange modern film and illustrated productions of his plays. Along the way, readers engage in reading and analyzing film stills, movie posters, and book covers; recognizing the three faces of film: literary, theatrical, and cinematic; exploring in depth the theatrical and cinematic elements of Shakespeare and then reconnecting them to the text; reading Shakespeare in full-length films; and transmediating Shakespeare's scripts into theater and film. As the "old" language of Shakespeare is constantly renewed through the "new" language of film, students develop twenty-first-century literacy skills through a marriage of the two.

Excerpt from An Introduction to Shakespeare The advances made in Shakespearean scholarship within the last half-dozen years seem to justify the writing of another manual for school and college use. The studies of Wallace in the life-records, of Lounsbury in the history of editions, of Pollard and Greg in early quartos, of Lee upon the First Folio, of Albright and others upon the Elizabethan Theater, as well as valuable monographs on individual plays have all appeared since the last Shakespeare manual was prepared. This little volume aims to present what may be necessary for the majority of classes, as a background upon which may be begun the study and reading of the plays. Critical comment on individual plays has been added, in the hope that it may stimulate interest in other plays than those assigned for study. Chapters I, VIII, IX, X, and XIII are the work of Professor MacCracken; chapters V, VI, VII, XII, and XIV are by Professor Pierce; and chapters II, III, IV, and XI are by Dr. Durham. The authors have, however, united in the criticism and the revision of every chapter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
