Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from The Psychological Review, Vol. 1: 1895-96 Only when such an equation is determined will the foun dation be laid for the mathematical investigation of mental phenomena. For it is doubtful if exact methods can be applied to the study of mental relations, independent of physical phenomena, until the much Simpler problems of Psycho-physics have been solved.relations existing between the intensity, area and time of dermal stimuli, and the resultant sensations and perceptions. We will first, however, treat of dermal sensations with refer ence to the quality of the stimulus. In this way we shall be in a position to appreciate more fully the significance of the efiects of variations of the stimulus in quantity. Excerpt from Psychological Review, Vol. 1 In other words, gentlemen, let us allow Our eyes to wander with an aesthetical and ethical, rather than purely scientific, intent over our broad and fair domain, before we settle down, as a well-organized colony, to its minuter exploration and cultivation. The three classes of Inquiries to which reference was just made are the following: (i) What is the relation in which the statistical and experimental investigation of mental phenom ena stands to the total science of psychology, in the larger meaning Of the latter words? (2) What is the relation in which the science Of psychology, thus understood, stands to that interpretation Of the external world and Of human life, in its yet larger and profounder experiences, which we are wont to call philosophy? (3) What is the relation in which the science Of psychology stands to conduct and to the prao tical welfare Of mankind? More briefly expressed: how shall we regard the science Of mental life as related to the methods and conclusions Of the most nearly allied physical sciences, to philosophy, and to human action and character? Providing a comprehensive exploration of the major developments of social psychological theories that have taken place over the past half century, this innovative two-volume handbook is a state of the art overview of the primary theories and models that have been developed in this vast and fascinating field. Authored by leading international experts, each chapter represents a personal and historical narrative of the theory′s development including the inspirations, critical junctures, and problem-solving efforts that effected theoretical choices and determined the theory′s impact and its evolution. Unique to this handbook, these narratives provide a rich background for understanding how theories are created, nurtured, and shaped over time, and examining their unique contribution to the field as a whole. To examine its societal impact, each theory is evaluated in terms of its applicability to better understanding and solving critical social issues and problems.

Excerpt from The Psychological Review, Vol. 1: Series of Monographs Supplements, Vol IV, No I, Whole No. 17, January 1903, Harvard Psychological Studies; Containing Sixteen Experimental Investigations From the Harvard Physchological Laboratory This first volume does not give account of all sides of our laboratory work. An essential part Of the investigations every year has been the study Of the active processes, such as atten tion, apperception, and volition. During the last year several papers from these fields have been completed, but we were unable to include them in this volume on account of the space limits; they are kept back for the second volume, in which accordingly the essays on the active functions will prevail, as those on perception, memory, and feeling prevail in this volume. It is thus Clear that we aim to extend our experimental work over the whole field Of psychology and to avoid one-sideness. Nevertheless there is no absence of unity in our work; it is not scattered work as might appear at a first glance; for while the choice of subjects is always made with relation to the special interests of the students, there Is after all one central interest which unifies the work and has influenced the development of the whole laboratory during the years Of my direction. Excerpt from The Psychological Review, Vol. 1: 1895-96 The extent to which mental phenomena can be measured is not the least important of the many problems before Experimental Psychology. If one mental process is functionally related to another, it is possible for Psychology to become an exact science. If, however, the only measurable attribute of Mind is Time, Psychology can never hope to attain to the exactness of the physical sciences. The solution of this problem will be found only by experience. The psychologist should not, moreover, be discouraged because Herbart's heroic attempt to apply to Psychology the methods of Mechanics was an ultimate failure, nor yet because Fechner's famous logarithmic law is not now generally accepted. Even if the measurement of mental relations be yet an open question, exact methods may be applied to the investigation of the subjective correlatives of measurable physical phenomena. The most obvious problem of the kind is the relation between the intensity of stimulation and the corresponding sensation. But stimuli may vary in the time and area of application as well as in the intensity. If intensity be a measurable attribute of sensation, and if the time and area of stimulation be also related to the intensity of sensation, the relation of the four quantities may be expressed in the form of an equation: S = f (i, a, t) Only when such an equation is determined will the foundation be laid for the mathematical investigation of mental phenomena. For it is doubtful if exact methods can be applied to the study of mental relations, independent of physical phenomena, until the much simpler problems of Psycho-physics have been solved.
