This work not only traces Audie Murphy's life as a film actor (from Beyond Glory, 1948, to A Time for Dying, 1971) but also provides a biography that runs from his birth to his three years in the army, winning every possible combat medal including the Congressional Medal of Honor--and from his Hollywood debut at James Cagney's invitation to his final dramatic decline, gambling his fortunes away, becoming involved in violent episodes, and dying in a plane crash in 1971. Each of the 49 film entries gives full credits, including casts, characters, crew, date of release, location, and cost, backgrounds for directors and main players, and comments and anecdotes from interviews with Murphy's colleagues. Critical reviews are quoted and the work is richly illustrated with film stills and private photographs.

Spirit of the Proud Land: The Sequel tells the rest of the story of the Ridges and Westmorelands. The sequel begins in October of 1829, with Godfrey Ridge and Patrick O' Callahan signing on with a slave ship. However, at the time they were completely unaware that the sailing vessel's main cargo would be slaves. While on board the ship they became acquainted with Henry Shreve who planned an adventure up the Red River from New Orleans. While sailing the Red, their six-months quest would be remembered for the rest of their lives. The young men would travel with Henry Shreve on his historical journey to establish a port of entry now called Shreveport. After that historic, challenging experience, Godfrey became a scout for the Overland Freight Company. He would be successful in opening up new trails and freight depots into Tennessee as far as the Mississippi River. He would eventually accept his mother's marriage to Seth Wade, but only visited her on two separate occasions. Joseph Westmoreland raised his family in Montgomery County, Alabama. One of his younger sons, Reuben, would eventually leave the nest to see the new land they called
