This monograph provides information about the effects of bank size and legal structure on the efficiency of producing various banking services and functions in one state. This information should benefit regulators and bankers alike in their efforts to obtain a competitive and efficient banking system. The primary objective is to analyze the productive efficiency of North Carolina commercial banks. The basis for the analysis includes various of the major services and functions provided by its commercial banks. These activities may be classified as: (1) fund-supplying activities, including the production of demand and time deposit services; (2) fund-using activities, including the production of installment loan, business loan and real estate loan services, and management of the securities and investments function; (3) indirect activities, including administration and occupancy functions. The study will also determine how efficient North Carolina's 1968 banking system was relative to alternative size and legal organization configurations.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas presents the full text of the December 1999 working paper entitled "Evaluating the Productive Efficiency and Performance of U.S. Commercial Banks," written by Richard S. Barr, Kory A. Killgo, Thomas F. Siems, and Sheri Zimmel. The text is available in PDF format. This paper uses a data envelopment analysis (DEA) model to evaluate the productive efficiency and performance of U.S. commercial banks from 1984 to 1998. The results suggest that the impact of varying economic conditions is mediated by the relative efficiencies of the banks that operate in these conditions.
