Excerpt from The Print-Collector's Handbook IN the following pages an attempt is made to supply answers to some of the many questions that a number of years' experience has shown to be those most frequently asked by art amateurs at the commencement of their print-collecting, and also by those who have devoted some time and attention to the pursuit of their hobby. In consequence of the limitation of a single volume like the present one, it has been thought best to refrain from commenting upon the etchings and engravings of living artists whose place in art is not yet definitely fixed. Most of the illustrations have been made by the half-tone process; but in order that collectors may more closely examine the actual technique of the different methods of engraving, specimens of the various styles have been reproduced in collotype. In this latter process no screen or visible foreign grain intervenes to impair or destroy the texture of the original work, and the results are therefore as faithful as a mechanical process will yield. These collotype reproductions can be easily identified by reference to the List of Illustrations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Whitman's Print-Collector's Handbook: Sixth Edition, Revised and Enlarged With Additional Chapters Then again, the French line-engravings of the later decades of the eighteenth century, which are also very meagrely represented in the British Museum, have in the last few years, come so prominently into collectors' favour, the demand for them is so great, and their market appreciation has consequently advanced to such a remarkable extent, that it seemed to me they could no longer be reasonably ignored in a general handbook of print-collecting. Accordingly I have dealt with them in an additional chapter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Print Collector; An Introduction to the Knowledge Necessary for Forming a Collection of Ancient Prints The compiler of this little work has been a print-collector for upwards of twenty years, but he would much overstate its purport and pretensions if he were to profi'er it as containing the fruit of that length of experience: such experience is not of a nature to be communicated in words, or imparted by instruction, or acquired otherwise than by practice alone. All that he professes to do is to afford some little assistance to the young collector, such as shall enable him to commence his pursuit in a right direction. But, although it is not the fruit of experience that he pretends to communicate, it is the result of experience that induces him to publish. When he first began collecting, he was totally ignorant of all that is to be learned on the subject; he had a love for works of art. Excerpt from Engravings and Their Value: A Guide for the Print Collector The Valuation of Engravings, if it is to be accomplished satisfactorily, requires great technical knowledge and a thorough acquaintance with the market. NO amount of book-learning can ever compensate for a deficiency in practice, and the following pages are not written with the Object of promoting an impossibility. That the information contained in them may be useful in many respects, I do not, however, doubt. As a rule, the works of living engravers have not been noticed, since the judgment on their labours yet remains to be pronounced. I may conveniently mention here that that excellent and indeed indispensable work Of reference known to all collectors as Bryan's Dictionary, is specially noticed under the head of basan (f.) page 83, post. The Anarchist Cookbook will shock, it will disturb, it will provoke. It places in historical perspective an era when "Turn on, Burn down, Blow up" are revolutionary slogans of the day. Says the author" "This book... is not written for the members of fringe political groups, such as the Weatherman, or The Minutemen. Those radical groups don't need this book. They already know everything that's in here. If the real people of America, the silent majority, are going to survive, they must educate themselves. That is the purpose of this book." In what the author considers a survival guide, there is explicit information on the uses and effects of drugs, ranging from pot to heroin to peanuts. There i detailed advice concerning electronics, sabotage, and surveillance, with data on everything from bugs to scramblers. There is a comprehensive chapter on natural, non-lethal, and lethal weapons, running the gamut from cattle prods to sub-machine guns to bows and arrows.
