Excerpt from The Principles of Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 2 Decommsition of this kind is termed 'drydistillaticn' because, asindistillation, the substance is heated and vapours are given oil which, on cooling, condemns into liquids. In general. Decomposition, in absorbing heat, presents much in common to a physical change of state - such as, for example, that of a liquid into a gas. Deville likened complete decomposition to boiling, and compared partial decomposition, when a portion of a substance is not decomposed in the presence of its products of decomposition (or dissociation), to evaporation. Excerpt from General Chemistry, Vol. 1: Principles and Applications This book has been written to meet the demand for a Simple and practical treatment of the principles and applications of Chemistry. The author realizes that demands are now being made of teachers of Chemistry which would hardly have been considered several years ago. Not only must the student be taught the principles of chemistry and their applications in daily life, but he must be taught in such a way that, Should occasion arise, he can use chemistry in earning a living. The plea SO long made that chemistry is practical and useful is now being tested. Consequently the author has kept one thought in mind during the preparation of this book, viz.: principles and applications must go hand in hand. Principles are the foundation upon which applications rest. To teach either one exclusively is hazardous, for when separated one is as barren as the other is superficial. The author has aimed to include in this book not only the principles of Chemistry universally regarded as an essential part of a well-rounded course, but also numerous practical applications. First, the text includes a clear, Simple treatment of the facts, laws, theories, and principles that serve as the foundation of chemistry. This material is written in a style which assumes that the book is to be read, studied, and used by beginners. Special efiort has been made to present very clearly such needful topics as atomic weights, equations, and valence. All of this material is made more serviceable by a liberal selection of original exercises and problems containing many novel and attractive features. Teachers will find in these exercises and problems abundant material to drive home principles and arouse interest in the vocational aspects of chemistry. Excerpt from An Attempt to Establish, Vol. 1 of 2: The First Principles of Chemistry I have been induced to lay the result of my investigations before the public, chiefly for two reasons, with which I think it requisite to acquaint you. The first of these is, the great advantage which medical practitioners will derive from a knowledge of the atomic weights of bodies, and of the weights of the integrant particles of the salts, &c., which they have occasion to employ in their prescriptions. This knowledge will be easily acquired by a perusal of the following pages; and it will enable those who possess it to avoid some very awkward blunders, into which I have observed too many practitioners, even of considerable celebrity, frequently to fall, to the no little inconvenience of their patients. Indeed, till the atomic theory was pretty completely investigated, even chemists themselves were not exempt from such mistakes; and I could point out, if I thought proper, some remarkable examples of men who would take it amiss if the world did not give them credit for possessing much chemical science, falling into mistakes that no student of mine, who took the trouble to follow and understand the lectures delivered on chemistry in the College of Glasgow, would run any hazard of committing. Excerpt from The Elementary Principles of Chemistry This book on elementary chemistry is based on the plan which, without essential modification, the writer has been following for thirteen years with his classes beginning the subject. Its inception was under the stimulating suggestion of the late Professor Josiah P. Cooke, of Harvard University, an early advocate of what has been called the quantitative method in teaching the subject even in elementary courses. The temerity of the writer in thus offering to his fellow-students and teachers the outcome of his personal experience is due to the hope, perhaps egotistic, that he may contribute, in howsoever small a measure, to making practicable and serviceable that which, he enthusiastically believes, is both scientifically and pedagogically an improvement on the older and still largely prevailing method. In the preparation of the book two things have been assumed: first, that sufficient laboratory facilities are provided; and, second, that the teacher has information in the subject beyond that which the book itself supplies. The laboratory work by the student is made a large and essential part of the exposition, and it is generally assumed that he has performed the experiment illustrative of a topic before he gives attention to the fuller presentation of the same in the text. Excerpt from The Principles of Chemistry This work was written during the years 1868-1870, its object being to acquaint the student not only with the methods of observation, the experimental facts, and the laws of chemistry, but also with the insight given by this science into the unchangeable substratum underlying the varying forms of matter. If statements of fact themselves depend upon the person who observes them, how much more distinct is the reflection of the personality of him who gives an account of methods and of philosophical speculations which form the essence of science! For this reason there will inevitably be much that is subjective in every objective exposition of science. And as an individual production is only significant in virtue of that which has preceded and that which is contemporary with it, it resembles a mirror which in reflecting exaggerates the size and clearness of neighbouring objects, and causes a person near it to see reflected most plainly those objects which are on tho side to which it is directed. Although I have endeavoured to make my book a true mirror directed towards the whole domain of chemical changes, yet involuntarily those influences near to me have been the most clearly reflected, the most brightly illuminated, and have tinted the entire work with their colouring. In this way the chief peculiarity of the book has been determined. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
