This book is an introduction to blacksmithing with an emphasis on how I envision it to be practiced in the event of an apocalyptic event. It contains references to other works, useful information about junkyard steels, description of techniques used in iron working, charcoal-making, other kinds of metalworking and a chapter on the selection of weapons in addition to other information that might prove useful in the event of a wide-spread disaster scenario.

The Blacksmith is a post-apocalyptic-military-western(-ish) story that centers around a 62 year old man, Jeremiah Pratt, who's not only infamous for incredible war exploits, nor just for participating in the long wars from beginning to end, but for having survived them without having suffered any scars, while most other men his age are either dead or maimed. The United States is no longer in existence, and the continent is now divided into three territories, occupied and loosely controlled by the former security firms that revolted and eventually overthrew the US government. The long civil war not only divided the continent, but depleted resources while leaving a surplus of weapons and ammunition. As Jeremiah Pratt contends with old enemies, young fools, and traveling zealots, he tries to make sense of life, loss, destiny, and vengeance. Fate can be cruel and no one can survive so much without accumulating scars, even if they're not visible on the outside. Jeremiah's future lies in his past, so the story is told in two alternating timelines which converge at the end, like a closing circle, with a few twists and a satisfying ending.

How would you go about rebuilding a technological society from scratch? If our technological society collapsed tomorrow what would be the one book you would want to press into the hands of the postapocalyptic survivors? What crucial knowledge would they need to survive in the immediate aftermath and to rebuild civilization as quickly as possible? Human knowledge is collective, distributed across the population. It has built on itself for centuries, becoming vast and increasingly specialized. Most of us are ignorant about the fundamental principles of the civilization that supports us, happily utilizing the latest—or even the most basic—technology without having the slightest idea of why it works or how it came to be. If you had to go back to absolute basics, like some sort of postcataclysmic Robinson Crusoe, would you know how to re-create an internal combustion engine, put together a microscope, get metals out of rock, or even how to produce food for yourself? Lewis Dartnell proposes that the key to preserving civilization in an apocalyptic scenario is to provide a quickstart guide, adapted to cataclysmic circumstances. The Knowledge describes many of the modern technologies we employ, but first it explains the fundamentals upon which they are built. Every piece of technology rests on an enormous support network of other technologies, all interlinked and mutually dependent. You can’t hope to build a radio, for example, without understanding how to acquire the raw materials it requires, as well as generate the electricity needed to run it. But Dartnell doesn’t just provide specific information for starting over; he also reveals the greatest invention of them all—the phenomenal knowledge-generating machine that is the scientific method itself. The Knowledge is a brilliantly original guide to the fundamentals of science and how it built our modern world.

Many generations ago, a mysterious cataclysm struck the world. Governments collapsed and people scattered, to rebuild where they could. A mutation, "the Change,” arose, granting some people unique powers. Though the area once called Los Angeles retains its cultural diversity, its technological marvels have faded into legend. "Las Anclas" now resembles a Wild West frontier town… where the Sheriff possesses superhuman strength, the doctor can warp time to heal his patients, and the distant ruins of an ancient city bristle with deadly crystalline trees that take their jewel-like colors from the clothes of the people they killed. Teenage prospector Ross Juarez’s best find ever – an ancient book he doesn’t know how to read – nearly costs him his life when a bounty hunter is set on him to kill him and steal the book. Ross barely makes it to Las Anclas, bringing with him a precious artifact, a power no one has ever had before, and a whole lot of trouble.

To celebrate his one hundredth birthday, Simon The Saviour has offered to grant any one wish to each citizen who steps through the doors of his cathedral before sundown. Of course, there's a catch: to get in, you have to get past the other thousand people standing in The Line. As the sun begins to set on this historic day, Miracle has already come farther than any other woman in the infamous Line, determined to meet with the holy patriarch despite the forces marshaled against her. She defiantly presses forward in the shadow of The Saviour's cathedral, defeating each adversary she faces as the seconds count down towards twilight. She knows nothing of the political forces swirling nearby nor the religious agency that is about to upend her world, sending her on an adventure she never imagined and is unlikely to survive. For The Saviour is not what he seems...

What would a dwarf raised on Earth do when System Apocalypse happens? Read to find out. Derek Smith (what a name!) became a minor celebrity when his friend posted a video titled "The Real-World Dwarf is a cool dude!". Being a last-year high-schooler who is 4'8 (142cm) in height is one thing, but having the muscles of a bodybuilder and the face of a middle-aged man at the same time is another. And don't you dare to bring up shaving in front of him. Did I mention that the boy's favorite hobby is smithing? Derek always wondered if the gods sent him to the wrong world. Until, one day, Earth Awakened. With dungeons, monsters, magic, and status screens, everything became not so different from fantasy fiction. The sudden change brought chaos to the world, but to the young dwarf, it also brought the opportunity to discover his true self. And maybe to reunite with his real kinfolk. But first, he needs to survive. Who asked him to explore this abandoned mine at the worst time possible? Now Derek is trapped, and the only way to escape is to learn how this mysterious System works. Too bad there is no manual or teacher to help him with that. Or maybe there is?
