This third edition has been written to thoroughly update the coverage of injection molding in the World of Plastics. There have been changes, including extensive additions, to over 50% of the content of the second edition. Many examples are provided of processing different plastics and relating the results to critiCal factors, which range from product design to meeting performance requirements to reducing costs to zero-defect targets. Changes have not been made that concern what is basic to injection molding. However, more basic information has been added concerning present and future developments, resulting in the book being more useful for a long time to come. Detailed explanations and interpretation of individual subjects (more than 1500) are provided, using a total of 914 figures and 209 tables. Throughout the book there is extensive information on problems and solutions as well as extensive cross referencing on its many different subjects. This book represents the ENCYCLOPEDIA on IM, as is evident from its extensive and detailed text that follows from its lengthy Table of CONTENTS and INDEX with over 5200 entries. The worldwide industry encompasses many hundreds of useful plastic-related computer programs. This book lists these programs (ranging from operational training to product design to molding to marketing) and explains them briefly, but no program or series of programs can provide the details obtained and the extent of information contained in this single sourcebook.

"Polymer Science and Engineering: Challenges, Needs, and Opportunities," a report issued in 1981 by the National Research Council's ad hoc Panel on Polymer Science and Engineering gives ample support for the urgent need of increased commitment to basic studies on polymers. Needs and opportunities, mentioned in the Panel's list, included polymerization methods, specialty polymers, high performance materials, and in situ (reaction injection molding) polymerization for direct conversion of monomers/oligomers to useful shapes. Clearly, in all these and several other areas, advances in polymer synthesis are needed. Whether one takes a look at the commodity or specialty polymers area or considers areas of growing needs, such as polymers for the automotive, aerospace, electronics, communications, separations, packaging, biomedical, etc., advances in polymer synthesis are needed. Polymeric materials, as they are constantly being modified and improved, fine-tuned for current and additional needs, and more readily adopted by industry and the public, will have a vastly expanding influence on everyday life. However, lack of long-term support of meaningful size for basic research on all facets of polymer chemistry and engineering, with particular emphasis on making needed advances in polymer synthesis, could well stunt the growth of high techn.ology in our country. Expanding this thought, lack of attention to basic research on polymer synthesis could help foster or insure that we won't have materials with performance profiles to meet requirements of emerging technologies and national needs, in a reasonably economic and timely fashion.

Resin materials are broadly used in dentistry for almost all indications, and they will gain even more importance in the future. Especially the increasing performance and efficiency of the CAD/CAM technology and 3D-printing open possibilities to use resins which were not used up to now in dentistry. Besides dentists, dental students or dental technicians, there are many other specialists such as researchers, material scientists, industrial developers or experts of adjoining professional disciplines who are technically engaged in dental resins. The "Expert Level" is the third book of the series "Dental Resins - Material Science & Technology". The "Expert Level" includes all information and data presented in the "Basic Level" and "Advanced Level" of this series, but enormously expands the knowledge base. From a total database of 8.198 references, 1.707 were selected and used for this textbook. It comprises more than 1,000 manuscript pages, 384 figures and 124 tables. The "Expert Level" describes very accurately and comprehensively all details of the material science and technology of dental polymers and composites. Furthermore, their production methods and applications are discussed in detail. Therefore, this book is a unique treatise of the complete present knowledge about dental resins and dental resin composites. This includes the discussion of the - raw/starting materials together with the explanation and presentation of their chemical structures and properties, their CAS Numbers and the names of the manufacturers. - amounts of the raw/starting materials usually used to formulate the finished products. - important material and toxicological properties of the starting materials and the finished products. - detailed description of the production processes of essential starting materials such as the syntheses of essential monomers, the silanization of inorganic fillers or the manufacturing of unfilled and filled splinter polymers. - detailed description of the formulation and the properties of the finished products. Furthermore, for many commercial endproducts rather detailed formulations as well as the exact production processes are described. All ISO standards that are relevant for dental resins are listed, too. Furthermore, many essential methods to test the mechanical, chemical and toxicological properties are also presented and explained. The "Expert Level" enables every scientist with a good chemical knowledge not only to understand how dental polymers function, but also to develop new and improved products.

Ever since the beginning of the plastics and rubber industry, it was realized that useful products could be produced only if cer tain additives were incorporated into polymers. With the help of these additives, when physically dispersed in a polymer matrix, it has been possible to improve stability against thermal, oxidative, UV, hydrolytic and biological degradation, mechanical properties, flammability, cost, and processibility of plastics. The enormous growth of the volume of plastics consumed by modern society, and new application areas for plastics, have created a demand for new, better additives and better understanding of their functions in polymer systems. As a result of these trends there is a need for sharing of information on progress achieved in the area of polymer additives among engineers and scientists of the plastics industry and academia. This book is based on expanded and updated papers originally presented at the International Symposium on Polymer Additives, which was held in Las Vegas, Nevada, and was sponsored by the American Chemical Society, Division of Polymeric Materials Science and Engi neering. The book is divided into five parts which cover advances in various areas of polymer additives. The first part is devoted to the progress in understanding of UV degradation and stabilization of various polymers. Oxidation degradation and stabilization of plastic materials is covered in the second part. New developments in the stabilization of PVC are presented in the third part.
