En su madurez, el marqués de Santillana escribió obras de tipo moral y político. Entre ellas destaca este Prohemio a proverbios. Esta obra es resultado de un encargo de Juan II para la educación del príncipe Enrique. La Carta Prohemio al Condestable Don Pedro de Portugal (c. 1445) es una especie de introducción al conjunto de sus poemas que le envió al condestable Álvaro de Luna (su gran enemigo). Se trata del primer ensayo crítico en castellano sobre la situación de las literaturas castellana, gallega, catalana, francesa e italiana, y también la exposición de su teoría literaria. En la concepción aristocrática del marqués de Santillana, expuesta en el Prohemio a proverbios, la poesía no debe ser un mero pasatiempo, sino algo «útil», de contenidos profundos y trascendentes. Distingue entre poesía sublime, mediocre e ínfima; la primera sólo se expresa en griego y latín. Edición en castellano antiguo.
