Fortunately much had already been done; and still more fortunately my friend Mr. T. D. Robb, who had read the proofs so far and given me a number of valuable suggestions, kindly undertook to do what failing health was preventing me from doing, - a task for which he was admirably qualified by his sound scholarship and intimate acquaintance with the Scottish language and literature. The text was formed and the introduction written and most of my notes were compiled before the publication of the first volume of Professor Gregory Smith's exhaustive work. Being laid aside, however, by along and serious illness, I had an opportunity which I used of reconsidering what I had written, in the light of Professor Smith's conclusions.
