Excerpt from The People's Magazine, 1834, Vol. 1 There is a tract of country in the south-western part of Italy, which is called the Maremma. It is a flat, unhealthy region, particularly during the summer months, when all the inhabitants, who are able, remove from the place. There are no cottages or gardens to be seen scattered over the land; but 'here and there a dark, dismal-looking castle appears, which seems only to make the soli tude more dreary. The only stationary population in the Maremma consists of the cow and buffalo-keepers, and the forest rangers. The former are always mounted on horseback and armed with a lance, with which they keep in order the wild cows and fierce bulls, which are let to roam about these solitudes. These keepers lead a life of freedom and independence, like that of the Arabs of the desert. They are paid by yearly wages, besides which they generally rear up cattle of their own, which are allowed to feed with the rest. Excerpt from Impressions of America, Vol. 1 of 2: During the Years 1833, 1834, and 1835 I seek to describe its people as I saw them, clear-headed, energetic, frank, and hospitable; a community suited to, and labouring for, their country's advancement, rather than for their own present comfort. This is and will be their lot for probably another generation. To those, then, who seek scandalous innuendos against, or imaginary conversations with, the fair, the brave, and the wise amongst the daughters and sons of America, I say, Read not at all; since herein, though something of mankind, there is little of any man, woman, or child, of the thousands with whom I have reciprocated hospitality and held kind communion. Excerpt from Scribner's Monthly, 1870-1: An Illustrated Magazine for the People IT was Jeremy Train who sat down to his tea In his holiday clothes, looking prim as could be. The cravat on his neck had a marvellous tie, And his boots were as bright and as black as his eye, And his Whiskers and hair, which were turning to gray, Had been colored and curled at the barber's that day; And forgetting a little bald spot on his head, And a stoop in the back, any one would have said That the hearty old drover had seen less of life, By a dozen of years, than his sad little Wife. Mistress Barbara Train sat and served him his toast As polite as a princess, but pale as a ghost. There was fire in her eye which her tears could not quell, And a pain in her heart which her tongue might not tell; For she loved the Old drover too well, and she knew She had ceased to be charming and he to be true. Excerpt from The Comic Annual, 1834 As usual, I have endeavoured to conciliate the utilitarians, by mingling a little instruction with amusement; after the manner of the Library of Entertaining Knowledge. Thus the Reformer of our Legal Institutions will meet with a few sub missive hints; and so will the religious Formalist, on the exuberant exercise of the holy-stone on the upper deck; while an improvement is sug gested in naval poetry; and a protest is entered against the British Leaf, even as King James Counter-blasted the Virginian. I would fain be of use to my countrymen and only regret that I have not the power ascribed to me by a very respectable householder of the neighbourhood, who has called repeatedly when I have been at home, to inquire when I should be out P After reminding me that last year I had made game of the Zoological Farm, and satirized the Fasting, and taken off the Water-drinking, Why, said he, can't you take qfl the Assessed Taxes P.
