"This volume reflects the continuing interest and important contributions being made by archaeologists to the study of small lithic sites in the Northeast. The articles in this volume challenge existing notions that these small sites do not produce meaningful data about the past by highlighting the ways in which prehistoric populations exploited the local landscape for settlement purposes. Analysis of lithic assemblages from 12 prehistoric sites in the upper South Skunk River valley with components ranging from Late Paleoindian through Late Woodland indicates that prehistoric people in the area exploited a wide variety of local and exotic raw materials and organized their lithic reduction technologies in more complex ways than previous models have suggested. With only a few exceptions, all lithic raw material types, regardless of particular physical properties and quality, seem to have been utilized in very similar ways. In general, amorphous core reduction was implemented with reduced frequency as distance from the raw material sources increased. Amorphous cores, however, seem to have been transported over considerable distances, obscuring the role mobility may have played in prehistoric organization of lithic technology.

This research describes the organization of chipped stone lithic technology at the Mohler Farm site (13MA30), excavated in 1964 by David Gradwohl of Iowa State University. This site is a Moingona phase Oneota site located in south-central Iowa. This is primary archaeological data on a well-known but unanalyzed Moingona phase site. A brief outline of the excavations is provided. Documentation of the assemblage focuses on raw material procurement, site function, task diversity, tool production, and expedient and curated technologies. Proposed is a system of lithic adaptation reliant upon localized and non-local chert resources, minimal task diversity associated with game procurement and hide processing, minimal tool production time allotment due to agricultural developments, and the combination of both curated and expedient technologies in the toolkit. The assemblage is then interpreted in terms of contemporary Oneota models of social and environmental adaptation with emphasis on the roles of women and children in the production of the archaeological record.
