Third in a series after Michael’s Secret and No Secrets, Secrets Lie Still follows life at Highfield, an estate on Prince Edward Island beginning in September of 1939. Well aware of the growth of the Nazi war machine in Germany and its threats to the UK, a long-time senior strategist in Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, Rear Admiral (Ret.) Sir Richard Moncrieff, evacuated his wife and daughter to Highfield from Suffolk, England, in 1938. Sir Richard plans to continue his work from Highfield if German air strikes reach his SIS offices in London. When Germany attacks Poland on September 3, 1939, the world is plunged into war once again. While Sir Richard’s two sons serve the Royal Navy at sea under constant peril of U-boat attacks, the war finds its way to Highfield in a covert attack that threatens the lives of his wife, their expectant daughter, and her husband, Michael Moreland, a SIS operative and Highfield’s original superintendent. Amid all the perils that war brings, secrets still find ways to endanger lives and relationships among Highfield’s denizens and friends. While war menaces from without, some discover that secrets threatening their peace lie within.

“Edmond Genet from Ossining, New York, was the first American flier to die in the First World War after the United States declared war against Germany, shot down by anti-aircraft artillery on April 17, 1917. Genet was the great great grandson of Edmond-Charles Genêt, also known as Citizen Genêt, the French Ambassador to the United States shortly before the French Revolution who is mostly remembered for being the cause of an international incident known as the Citizen Genêt Affair. Edmond Genet sailed for France at the end of January, 1915, to join the French Foreign Legion while still technically on leave from the US Navy. He never arranged to be formally relieved of his responsibility to the Navy before joining the Lafayette Escadrille on January 22, 1917. This decision weighed heavily on him as time wore on since he could be classified as a deserter because the US was not yet formally in the war and his involvement in the Escadrille was therefore not an official assignment by the US military...He was particularly celebrated since it was known that he was the descendant of Citizen Genet. As the prospect of American Involvement in the war grew he became both increasingly worried and hopeful that his participation in the Escadrille would not be affected by the American entry into the war and sought the help of prominent Americans in France to help him straighten out his status. Ironically he died shortly after the formal entry of the US into the war before the issue of his status could be dealt with. Although other Americans had died as part of the Escadrille, he was the first one to do so after the US formally declared war on the Central powers. This made him the first official American casualty of the war despite the fact that the US had not yet had time to organize or send any actual troops to Europe...He was 20 years old at the time of his death.”—Wiki

A Military Attache in Japan (1929-1933), a work of history with the soul of a novel, is the compelling memoir of the late United States Army Colonel James G. McIlroy's service in Japan as Military Attache from 1929 to 1933. Brought to life with sensitivity by the author's daughter, Jane S. McIlroy, Colonel McIlroy's narrative takes readers on a wondrous journey through mid-twentieth-century political and military events. At the same time. Colonel McIlroy writes in delicious detail about his own military career, describing his appointment and ultimate service in Japan. He is an observant traveler. Come along with the Colonel as he creates vivid and revealing pictures of the Japanese Emperor and his family, Shinto ceremonies, elegant dinners, Japanese baths, and beautiful geishas in attendance at diplomatic functions. Interestingly, underlying much of the diplomatic context is Colonel McIlroy's main task-to learn how best to bomb Japan. It is information that will have a profound impact on history. Book jacket.
