Excerpt from The Nature and Authority of Conscience The Swarthmore Lectureship was established by the Woodbrooke Extension Committee, at a meeting held December 9th, 1907: the minute of the Committee providing for "an annual lecture on some subject relating to the message and work of the Society of Friends." The name "Swarthmore" was chosen in memory of the home of Margaret Fox, which was always open to the earnest seeker after Truth, and from which loving words of sympathy and substantial material help were sent to fellow-workers. The Lectureship has a two-fold purpose: first, to interpret further to the members of the Society of Friends their Message and Mission; and, secondly, to bring before the public the spirit, the aims and the fundamental principles of the Friends. The Lectures have been delivered on the evening preceding the assembly of the Friends' Yearly Meeting in each year. The present Lecture was delivered on the evening preceding the Conference of all Friends in August, 1920. A complete list of previous Lectures, as published in book form, will be found at the beginning of this volume. Excerpt from Conscience: Its Origin and Authority Those who are interested in the study of Ethics, and particularly Christian Ethics in relation to Christian Theology, must have been disappointed at the cursory treatment which the Conscience has received at the hands of English writers. For the most part Ethical writers have left it to the Theologians, and Theologians have referred inquirers back to Ethics. From the year 1660, when Jeremy Taylor published his Ductor Dubitantium, to the time when Joseph Butler preached his famous Sermons at the Rolls - they were first published in 1726 - no one seems to have devoted serious attention to what may be called the theory of Conscience. And, as far as I am aware - in spite of the immense change that has taken place since the eighteenth century in our way of regarding man, the world, and God - no one since Butler has given more than passing attention to the subject. Excerpt from Conscience and Criticism It has been the first desire of the author in writing this book to lessen the unnecessary opposition which commonly manifests itself between those radically are agreed in Christian Faith. Religion is so often attended by controversy, that men are much more aware of the points in which they differ than of those which they hold in common. Whenever, therefore, a person can adopt the attitude of sympathy with both sides, he may well wish to speak if he thinks that he can show the agreement to be far more important than the difference. The particular subject of controversy which now stirs thoughts and desires of this kind goes by the name of Higher Criticism. We have come to a time when religious people are beginning - but, in general, only beginning - to understand that such criticism is not always intentionally hostile to Christianity. They still believe, however, that in its own nature it undermines Christian security. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rufus Jones's two books, The World Within and The Nature and Authority of Conscience, are compiled for the first time into one volume because the two pursue the topic of the soul for two important reasons. First, Jones's two books enlighten us to the idea that the soul's proper function is the basis for a healthy conscience. Second, according to Jones, a materialistic world-view, which claims there is no proof for the existence of the soul, is without sufficient reasonable evidence to do so. Contrary to this materialistic view, Jones's two books reinstate the validity of the soul, in forming our conscience, our behaviours, and therefore our lives.
