Excerpt from The Michigan Digest Annotated, 1920, Vol. 1: Embodying All Reported Decisions From the Earliest Period Down to Volume 202 Michigan, Inclusive; Abandonment to Continuity The topical arrangement on the whole is based upon that of the Jacobs and Chaney Digest, which was prepared by Michigan lawyers and intended to meet the problems presented by the law in Michigan. Two generations of Michigan lawyers are familiar with it, and it has long been recognized as the best digest the state ever had. Some changes have of course been necessary, new subjects, such as the Workmen's Compensation Law, have come into being, while on the other hand other topics, such as Covenant, Debt and Trover, have become obsolete. As most legal questions present the application of principles rather than the nature or existence of the principle, treatment in specific rather than general topics has been sought. The volumes digested comprise all Michigan reports to the end of 202 Michigan and every case therein, except those which disclosed no point. In addition many decisions of the United States courts, not only the Sn preme Court but also the District, Circuit and Circuit Courts of Appeals, have been digested; either because they passed on the statutes of Michigan or matters of Michigan law or because they were decided on writ of error to judgments of the Michigan courts.
