It is hardly necessary to say that since then the chemical industries treated therein have made vast strides forward, not merely in respect of quantitative extension, but also in the methods of manufacture. It seems, therefore, full time to register this progress, which I have been enabled to do by personal observation as well as by a great number of communications made to me, apart from the vast amount of material contained in the technical publications and in the patent specifications during this time. I have done my best to embody this fresh matter with that contained in the former editions, and I trust the readers of this Treatise will give me credit for my endeavours to keep it up to its standard of usefulness, and that they will excuse the errors and omissions inevitable when dealing with such a vast subject.
